Yeah. I've known this guy since high school, and he's one of my closest friends. He helped me out during times when no one else would. So I felt this was the least I could do.

For a while I actually thought I was being too cheap, but guess not.

Yes, him and Ewan (they're best friends) it's really good. Especially the first one (Long Way Around). The parts in Kazakhstan and Mongolia are amazing, so remote but beautiful. The preparation is also really fun to watch as they venture into something they've never done but are very enthusiastic for. It felt very pure, raw and personal. I enjoyed it immensely, very highly recommend it.

I watched both after the Top Gear Vietnam special because I wanted more of that, and while nothing is as good as Top Gear, both were great. Long Way Down isn't as good because it's just hard to emulate a great thing twice, but it's still entertaining. I remember watching one of the promos, and Ewen was like "this series is about me and Charlie going on one great adventure...AGAIN!"

We're at the Aqua Bamboo and Spa on Kuhio Ave. My wife just finished her MBA on Monday night, so we're celebrating her newfound freedom more than my birthday. We swam in the ocean for an hour tonight, it was fantastic. All my memories of body surfing here as a kid came back.

Japan has thrown up on Waikiki more than it did last time I was here (Mos Burger RIP, though). I had squid yakisoba for lunch and we ate at an awesome okonimyaki place for dinner tonight. We're headed up to North Shore tomorrow, it will be nice to get away from all the crowds.

Hmm, we stayed at the Waikiki Mariott, I believe. Same exact view!

I wasn't looking for Japanese *anything* when I was there. I wanted as much American crap as I could get. We found it funny that there were tons of convenience stores (ABC Mart DOMINATES HAWAII, lol) stocked with Japanese tea though. My in-laws were happy. I also was surprised to find that Taco Bell (it's nasty, but I hadn't eaten it in over three years!) had a Japanese menu-- they aren't in Japan.
