Star Ocean 4's dub is nothing compared to the worst of the worst, so no, they aren't. They're the reason the game doesn't have voice acting.

Although I'll admit, that game suffers more from bad audio quality, poor writing, a bunch of "don't give a flying fuck" cutscenes about crystals and shit, and from the fact that there are about 20 different accents going on at once in the party than from straight bad VA.

Naw man. You said that FF shouldn't be held as a high standard for voice acting in rpgs, when FF12 has some pretty solid va. I'm not saying it has the best va ever, because it doesn't. But it definitely is a high standard within the localized efforts. Honestly, it's not the va that makes the localization so good either; it's the translation. But va is only the icing on the cake for me.

I don't see how it's a fan trap at all, especially when you ask "what's worse of the worse" and bring up a final fantasy title in the same sentence. Final Fantasy titles have a hell of a lot better voice acting than earlier efforts.

Have you played Grandia psx version? Or Jade Cocoon?

FF12 had great vo. Other than some awkward writing/scenes (I'M CAPTAIN BASCH) it's better than a lot of games and most jrpg. It also didn't have as much pantomiming and slow-tard talk that can ruin good casting.

in general, the standard for voice acting in games has become better.

and the EoE combat looks good. It's a UE3 360 game, right? I'll probably get it when it's released here.

I don't know, I don't have any answers really. Japanese VA is more of a band-aid...I can't pretend to like it better for any other reason than that I'm not familiar with what good Japanese VA should sound like--they could be completely awful. And over the years, I'm used to the types of inflection most commonly used in Japanese VA, so I think I'm starting to feel how generic a lot of it actually is.
