I used to work here, almost live here, I even nearly died here once. I come in today to schedule classes, because I am just about done.

JUST WHEN I AM ALMOST DONE, THEY YANK MY FINANCIAL AID FOR TAKING TWO YEARS TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IT IS THAT I REALLY WANT TO DO WITH MY LIFE. I COULD FILE AN APPEAL, BUT I REFUSE TO DO SO ON THE GROUNDS THAT I WILL NOT SUPPORT SENSELESS ACTS OF BUREAUCRACY.

4 YEARS, THIRTY FUCKING THOUSAND DOLLARS IN STUDENT LOANS, AND NOTHING TO SHOW FOR IT.

Miles, Ralph, Josh, Richard, Richard,  Richard, Ji, Wayne, Robert, James, The Two Good Doctors, Yash The Stampede, and all the rest that I got love for: thank you. Thank you for molding me into the man I am today, thank you for sparking my real interest in computers.

Today is the worst day of my life.

Nothing personal to anyone, but it always struck me as incredibly naive/odd that people would spend extra time in college while they figure out what do to, with no income and accumulating huge debt, instead of just accepting that anything they do actually chose won't really be what they want to do , graduate with a degree in something useful that they are good at, and then figure it all out after they graduate while they are at least living a non-destitute lifestyle while not accuring student loan debt.

Also, please appeal T234. Don't give up at this point in the game.

Yep, you're in the game, stick it out. Of course they want to yank your Financial Aid...every institute tries to find ways to eke more money out of you. A simple appeal should clear it all up. Best of luck!

Frag I think it's because they expect to gain experiences in college that will guide them. In retrospect I think it's wiser just work and travel some instead.

Maybe it's retrospective or just my experience since I was workin' HARD SCIENCE, but I cannot recall a period in my life where the world was more insular than college was. I worked myself to death to pay for school and room/board , studied all the time, and when I could no longer stuff shit into my head, played a lot of age of empires.

College is indeed a scam, but it's going to take a good 20-30 years for employers to realize that a college degree really isn't  necessary for a lot of jobs. Until then it's like a rabies tag-if you want to be in good standing and have a chance at a decent job, you really need one.

In economic speak, a college education is supposed to be used as "signalling", which circumvents the problem of asymmetric information in labor markets. But I don't think it is necessarily practical or as great a signal as it used to be

What kind of community college charges so much? Most, at least in CA, are only $20-$26 per unit and you can walk away with an AA/AS for under $1500 not counting textbooks.

That's pretty much exclusive to California, ManaByte.  I've lived in other places.  Community college near me is like $125 per credit and that's considered inexpensive.

I don't think it has to do with being necessary, it just cuts down the applicant pool to, ideally, a more reliable group of people.

T234, funny story, you are the SECOND person I've heard of to get fucked over by colleges after I did myself. My friend Wes almost got suspended for bullshit too.
