Actually, TP's entire existence is repetitious.  It's the 4th console Zelda game in a row that plays identically to its predecessor, except in a new environment.  The series hasn't really evolved since OoT.

Wrong. The first half has a good balance of story, dungeon crawling, and a nice variety of gameplay, much like your much beloved Okami.

My suggestion to those who say it doesn't belong on this thread: play the game.

We HAVE played it, doofus. I have the Gamecube copy -- the DEFINITIVE version with ACTUAL CAMERA CONTROLS no less -- right here.

Nostalgia and franchise fetishism don't get to factor into Game of the Year awards, hummo. Okami innovates whereas Zelda duplicates on the same formula. Just vote for Okami and accept that Zelda, as a sort of inferior subset of it's innovation and quality, is getting recognized as well!

But the "story" is a drawn-out, boring retelling of the same ol' Zelda story.  I don't want Zelda to have a story.  I want to get right to collecting the so many magical wobblihoos that I need to save the princess.  Give me dungeons, fuck villages.

Yeah I'm sure, Drinky. And that just came out today or something, right? You've put a decent amount of time into it? Or did you simply play for 30 minutes and then claim Ogaymii better?

It has the same core principles, but hardly the same story.

So you don't want Zelda to have story but you don't mind Ohgaymii's lack of deep gameplay and overly cinematic feel. Right.

Dude, I'm gonna scribble up a FULL, OBJECTIVE REVIEW -- from the perspective of someone who digs the game formula but hates the Link character and has no real nostalgia for Nintendo -- soon enough, and you can pick at it then.

Okami has incredibly deep gameplay -- far deeper than Zelda. Okami's environments are more interactive, and the features of them hidden more cunningly. Okami has more items, more combat moves, more weapon variety, and a better level-up/customization system. Zelda has what: a few extra mini-games? Do you even grok what "deep" means, duder?

I do in fact consider Okami having a story to be a strike against it, as much as I consider it to be a strike against Zelda.

If Zelda was a votable option, it would win.

Okami am Zelda ripoff total. For that reason, no GOTY for it.

It's a good game, but it's not the game of the year.  Why is that so hard to understand?  I didn't even vote for Okami.  R6 is better than both Zelda and Okami.  Nintendo fans are just so software-starved that they have to convince themselves that every release is OMG BEST GAME EVER.  Zelda hasn't evolved in nearly a decade, why should it be getting GOTY props?

It would win because of nostalgia and console bias, not quality. Nintendo could package shit with Link stamped on the box -- wait, they have, it's gonna be called Phantom Hourglass -- and some of you would vote it GotY regardless.

Line up the features, visuals, sounds and innovations, and Okami beats TP in almost all if not ALL categories. You shouldn't prevent Okami from getting the credit it's due just because the sight of a swishy garden gnome in green tights makes you a little light in the loafers, or because a few dinky MIDI samples transport you back to the halcyon days of morbidly obese childhood.

The fact you don't think it's GOTY is not the issue. The issue is that the fact it, and Gears, were excluded because they don't fit the MAF-Drinky-TVC group think sensabilities, and they are excluded on the poll in fear that they would win. Which is bullshit.

I suppose adding new game mechanics like the wolf senses, horseback combat, or new items like the spinner, etc. aren't an evolution. ::)

TP is going to be a more ciritcal/financial success than Okami. I guess everyone other than Drinky/TVC is just caught up in the nostalgia. Too bad so sad. :'(

I put about 120 hours into Oblivion, and I don't even like RPGs.  I still haven't finished, because I saved two of the Guilds for a different character.  Enemies that level with you keeps the challenge up.

Again, no Oblivion, no vote.  You guys can continue circle jerking amongst yourselves, and give the one who nuts first a special prize.

horseback combat's a mini-game, and the rest are just the routine and all-too-few "new items" added in each Zelda refresh, The Celestial Brush is a completely new and GESTURAL rethink of the entire item usage system in this subgenre, and it works fabulously.

Do you think Okami is one of those games that will be impossible to find in a few months, or will it come down in price fairly quickly?  I want to play it, but I don't want to spend more than 20 actual cash dollars on Ps2 games (I bought my ps2 solely for use as a cheap game system).

That's easy.  It was a Saturn game made near the end of the Saturn lifecycle.  Why should Sega have made a zillion copies when they had probably stopped manufacturing consoles by that point?

Twilight Princess, just by counting WTF NO TWILIGHT PRINCESS replies to this thread, would be winning the poll if it were an option. It would have at least four votes, maybe more (I couldn't tell if some were sarcasm or not, but there are at least four votes for TP, including mine and excluding the ones I was unsure about)

Aren't Okami's dungeons pretty weak? That bebpo guy on GAF was jizzing about the game when he first got it but even he said the dungeons don't stack up to Zelda dungeons. And aren't the first several hours just as tedious as TP?

Also, isn't Okami even easier than Wind Waker?

One last thing, although Okami doesn't have to worry about any texture flaws due to the style, I gotta say I'm not too big a fan of the water color/oil painting look.

Yes to all questions.

Okami is more story based than Zelda. Most of your time is spent in towns and in the overworld.
