Who is buying Wolfenstein?
« on: August 14, 2009, 09:24:09 PM »
I normally don't pay much attention to this kind of stuff, but Activision is obviously fucking this one over because of the iD jump - no marketing to speak of, very little in the way of previews on the major gaming sites

hell, that one dev had to put himself out there and act the fool to get some notice, sucks that he had to do that because of bullshit publisher grudge politics

i feel bad for the raven dudes because they're going to take all the heat if it tanks, even if the game is good (and it looks like cheesy fun, which is all anyone should really expect from a wolfenstein game)

i'm buying this on pc, that's probably the only platform which will have any MP community to speak of whatsoever

fuck that redheaded garbage pail kid lookalike kotick, i hope all his overpriced plastic accessory shit bombs this winter and he gets tossed out on his ass

It'll be in the bargain bin really quick, so I'm going to hold off. The marketing has been awful. I forgot the game existed until like yesterday.

I might get it on 360.  I have a pretty finite amount of cash for the next year and only $77 in gamestop credit, so it may not be until it's clearanced.  and yeah, Activision is sour fucking grapes.  Is Activision's reign as the evil guy in the industry worse than EA's?  it seems like it, since they have such a wider variety of popular IP.

I'm hoping for a demo.  It looks like it could be a fun shooter, but it seems like they're trying to make things a bit too serious.  The fun of Wolfenstein games in the past (and some now, like Wolf RPG) was that it was kinda wacky WW2 time.  This is all about how there is a mcguffin and some occult shit happening.  They should have made it even more wacky WW2 to separate it from things like CoDWaW, or FEAR 2, or even Singularity.  Singularity and Wolfenstein were both shown at E3 from Activision and they seemed like the same game.

I played a little bit of it at Quakecon. It seemed pretty fun, although I really only got shoot a few Nazis and some weird monster boss and didn't get to try out any of the magic, but it didn't really leave enough of an impression on me to make me want to go out and buy it any time soon.

I have Wolfenstein in my hand. :flex

I just got back from the Quakecon wrap party. There was like 500+ people there. They were having all the tournament finals, but in between matches, they were like "hey, let's throw these t-shirts into the crowd" and then that turned into "hey, let's throw these copies of Orcs & Elves DS into the crowd" and then it finally escalated to "hey, let's just throw some Wolfenstein into the crowd". I managed to grab about the 5th copy that was thrown out. The dude behind me tried to put a little two-finger pinch on it, like he was going to snatch it out my hand when I was coming down with it, but I was like distinguished black fellow please. So yeah, it may be a crappy game, but it's crappy game I don't have to pay for now...

..........except it's the Xbox 360 version. PC gaming am cry.  :'( At least it wasn't the PS3 version. I'll play it, and if it's worth owning, I'll sell it and get the PC version.

P.S. I saw two dudes fighting like rabid dogs over Orcs & Elves. It was hilarous. I just wanted to say "guys, O&E is a pretty cool game, but it's like $9.99 at Gamestop. The t-shirts were probably worth more than the game" but instead I just watched them and laughed. Cuz  that's how people with Wolfenstein roll.

Might I suggest checking out GameRang and GottaPlay?

GameRang won't list the wait status unless I sign up for $15, and I'm not going to drop money just to find out everything I'd want has a big "Long Wait" slapped across the bottom

As for GottaPlay, this is their new release list for 360:

G-Force
King of Fighters XII
Watchmen
Rock Band: Country
Brave: A Warrior's Tale

:lol

thanks for the suggestions, but i think if gamefly screws me on batman i'm just gonna do the buy/rent on the few upcoming games i really want to play, unless i get lucky and something is actually in stock at a redbox kiosk

On the same day that Activision releases its latest title in the Wolfenstein franchise, our sister site GamesIndustry.biz can confirm that a number of the team responsible for the multiplayer portion of the game have been laid off.

UK based Endrant Studios had been co-developing Wolfenstein with Raven Software, and it was the first title by the team since forming in July 2008.

"We have recently completed a development cycle and have regrettably been forced to make adjustments to staff and headcounts," said a spokesperson for the studio.

"Those affected are valued members of our team who have worked incredibly hard on our latest title. We hope that they land on their feet quickly."

The spokesperson could not specify the exact number of redundancies at the 17-man team due to ongoing efforts to secure other work.

Wolfenstein for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 is released today in North America, and on Friday in Europe.

IGN review:

Quote
7.5    Presentation
There's a nice amount of polish on things, but it can't paper over the fact that the story feels a bit familiar.

7.5    Graphics
While the graphics engine isn't as cutting edge as others, it does a decent job of creating battlefields that feel alive.

8.0    Sound
The sound designers make every gun sound just right; just close your eyes and listen to the chaos.

7.5    Gameplay
It's also satisfying to vaporize Nazis, but you can't help but wish that the ideas here were developed further.

7.0    Lasting Appeal
The campaign is about as long as most shooters, but multiplayer lacks the depth or replayability of other games in the genre.

7.3    Decent

i'll give raven my money, $35 isn't that much

here's the thing - some of the same people who have equated activision's sulky withdrawal of marketing for wolfenstein with a lack of quality will drop $60 several times over the next few months on overhyped games which score in the high 9s on IGN, but which they will never enjoy enough to finish and they'll whine about endlessly afterwards, and i'll find it hilarious as usual because those people are morons who deserve to have their money stolen

i spent $35, i'm having a blast so far, and the randomly generated number of 7.3 means absolutely nothing to me

IGN gave GTAIV a 10 and Prey (Prey) a 9, and that's a pretty good representation of their sliding scale of fucktarded gamebabbling and meaningless digits

But one thing, why the fuck does this game look so ugly? Is there any particular reason? Shouldn't it have been the opposite in this case?

Did you play KZ2? The A.I. is good enough and the bullets deadly enough on higher difficulties that you should get a decent challenge out of it.
