Anyone play Metal Slug 3D?
« on: August 15, 2009, 04:35:16 PM »
Anyone play the 3D version of Metal Slug for the PS2? I found a cheap copy at a store here in Hawaii, and was thinking of picking it up.

Metal Slug 3D is CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP

It's one of those games that it's better to forget was ever even made.  SNK likes to put out a stinker every gen. There was SS Warriors' Rage on PSOne, this turd on PS2, and now SS Edge Of Destiny in arcades and later this year on 360(PS3?).

Dennis Miller, when he was still funny before 9/11 broke his brain, had a line about this kind of logic. I can't find the quote, so I'll paraphrase: "That's no bargain. Man, you find a place that's got lime green, polyester leisure suits with collars like a fucking hang-glider, and they're on a two-for-the-price-of-one sale, that's no bargain. If they really want to fuck you, they'll give you three of those damned suits."

Ah, also forgot to mention this but the store I visited had Rock Revolution on sale for $4.99. Considering how much I like Rock Band, I thought ooh, this is my chance! But then realized that $4.99 for something that's not in the bargain bin is just weird.

I asked the clerks why it was cheap, and these guys that had SOMETHING good to say about ANYTHING else just shook their heads and said, "It's really, really bad. If you like playing music games, it might make you dislike them. It turns the songs into a kind of punishment." So, hey: bullet dodged.  :mrt

So, how does one get a job in Japan providing poor English voice work? They tried to give Metal Slug an actual plot with full English voiceovers (Japanese subtitles)...

Just played the first two levels of the game. Wow, it's pretty bad. It's pretty easy controlling Marco on foot as long as you hold down the R1 lockon button and shoot at everything, but once you hop into a Metal Slug tank the game becomes all kinds of broken.

The game gets worse as you go.  I don't remember how far I made it, just that I got to a level that was frustratingly-difficult solely due to the controls and enemy placement.

I think those VA companies aren't in Japan.  That would be fun job I think.   :lol  The English voice and story seems to indicate that they had a U.S. release in the works and scrapped it.  Good call!

Transformers: Tataki on the PS2 also has English voice acting, but never made it over. I wonder if they wanted to release it here but were shot down due to the Armada game?

It's pretty sad that Metal Slug 3D was their 10th Anniversary project. Oh well, I'm glad I picked it up, even though I now have the Nihon AIDSU.

I just read your old thread on Metal Slug 3D at GAF, Lyte. You were so kind and forgiving to this game three years ago.  :lol

Yeah, that was totally the fanboy in me coming out.  I went from "yeah, it's okay I think" to "I SOLD THIS PIECE O' SHIT FUCK IT!!!!!!" pretty quickly after a few stages.   :lol

In my defense, I wrote this after playing like one level and I did say it's nowhere near MS1-3 levels.  But yeah, damn.  I was much harsher on shit after that.  ESPECIALLY on Samurai Spirits Sen.   :lol

Quote
Got the game too, but didn't get to play it for too long, as I was tired, and also ended up walking out of the game store with five new titles yesterday, so a lot of time was spent trying them all out.

So far, I'm finding Metal Slug to be a pretty decent game, but nothing that's approaching the level of Metal Slug 1-3. One thing that is a nice change is the addition of storyline elements; the game has a LOT of cut scenes and FMVs, all of which, along with menu screens, are in English, so this is a very import-friendly game. Voices are laughably bad, however that was pretty much expected.

Visually, the game reminds me a bit of Capcom's Maximo series, with characters that are somewhere between looking normal and super-deformed. They look very much like the Metal Slug artwork, so this style fits the game well. Game play is pretty good for the most part; I haven't found too much of a reason to jump yet, but generally, you just take out enemy soldiers in one or two hits, knife the guys with shields, and then circle-strafe the larger enemies like tanks to take them out. The control responds well, although there were a few times where I seemed to lose my lock-on for some reason. You also now have a radar to use in tracking enemies, which is especially useful against vehicles like helicopters.

Perhaps the biggest change to the game in the jump from 2D to 3D are the customization features. During game play, you can find various types of gold by killing enemies and breaking barrels/crates, which you can then use in upgrading your characters' attributes, making them stronger, having longer lifebars, etc. You can also find new main/alternative/grenade weapons to use. In addition, you can also customize the Metal Slug tank, giving it new parts/looks. I'm not sure if doing this actually affects the tank's performance or gives it new weapons yet, however.

I definitely need to spend more time playing this game to flesh out a more solid opinion; it's hard to tell if this is going to be a big game, full of levels, or just one that's made to be replayed over and over just yet. Also started talking screenshots last night; will post some later on.
