I got mugged.
« on: August 17, 2009, 02:54:01 AM »
Dumb things I did:
-Wore my server apron while walking home at 11pm.
-Told guy I didn't have change for a ten.  I heard someone got robbed in the area a few months before.  I then try walking away and say something like " I only have 20s".  GAWD HURR DURRR.
-Hesitated like I could possibly figure some way out of being held gunpoint at point blank range.
-Tried LIEING to a mugger that I didn't have anything as if he wouldn't check my pockets All though my clamming up for the most part may have kept him from finding my wallet with $40.
-Try to bargain for my new box of Newports and asked if I could at least keep my cards. (he didn't find them)

All in all I lost $38 in tips and my pocket change plus the cigarettes.  Considering how fucking haphazard I handled the situation it wasn't a terrible loss.

The guys at the gas station had him on survelliance from earlier in the store.  The officer they sent out is pretty positive he matches other descriptions in the said previous robbery and domestic disputes at my apartment complex.  The gas station attendant claims to know what building he stays in.  I still doubt it will get resolved quickly.

I don't think I'm traumatised yet.  One thing I realise now is that if I had a weapon I wouldn't have had any time to pull it out.  His demeanor changed so abruptly.

If you can learn from it and handle the next situation better (should it arise) then some good came of all this.  When things like this happen I imagine it's easy to make a wrong move because it's hard to think straight.

Man that sucks, but your life >> money.

Did he really pull gun?

That's one of the things that makes me weary of traveling the US alone.

I lived in one of the shittiest parts of Atlanta for six years and was never robbed or accosted by anyone other than the occasional bum/hooker.  You just have to not be an idiot.

Just don't walk late at night ALONE with an outfit that says I just got off from my job where I take home cash every night.  And if anyone is asking for money they might be just seeing if you have any on you.  I tried declining at first but he persisted and I let that quip slip.

edit: What's bothering me now is that -besides avoiding being an idiot- I don't know what I would do in another encounter.  I can't afford a car without a second job. The buses don't run after 6pm.  I've done the 30 minute walk to work for 3 years with no worries.  I wasn't really scared when I had the gun pointed at me, but more annoyed that eventually giving the money up was my only option.  I had no choice, no power, or influence.  And it could easily happen again.  Dude took away my sense of security.  Now I'm going to have to be constantly monitoring my surroundings and taking strict routes everywhere. Shucks.

Any statistics for muggings?

These situations are interesting because we all feel really clever, and then when the shit actually hits the fan we get to find a whole other side to ourselves. Especially when it turns around quickly and unexpectedly; muggers are the forgotten arm, likelier to knock you out than a punch you can see coming.

Glad you're physically unhurt. Just remember you can choose your own psychological reaction to this whole incident.

Oh yeah.  I'm having some trouble sleeping and a little knot in my stomach.  But I'm choosing to see this as a lesson.  Like I said it was aggravating, but I wasn't flustered too much or scared or mad.

You may feel different tomorrow, different again when you walk down the street again, and different still again next week. You should take time to process this.

I've studied a mess of martial arts, and I'm pretty sure if I'd been in the same situation I'd not be able to sleep that night, and would have given about even odds that I'd need a change of shorts.

the majority of muggings all have to do with how you carry yourself, stuff like talking on the phone, looking at the ground when you walk all make you a target

if you think theres a chance youre about to get mugged looking like youll put up a fight can be enough, when i lived in cincy i was being tailed real close and stuck my keys sticking out of my fist and raised my arm, he crossed to the other side of the street and disappeared, theres always going to be somebody else

Good call about the keys.  I also read about a guy who threw his wallet and ran when the muggers confronted him directly.  Seems risky, but on the other hand, they just want your wallet, right?

I'm going to keep my cards separate from my wallet from now on. There have been a some muggings in my area lately, targeted at 20 something males, and usually with a cheap shot to start it.  One guy got a brick to the back of his head.

I keep my cards in a metal cigarette holder in my front pocket, totally separate from my wallet.  Not that I'm liable to get robbed in Willywood since A) it's Willywood and B) I don't ever go out but it's an old habit from my Atlanta days.

Hmm, I got a call from the detective.  They arrested a guy, and when presented with my story he admitted to it.  Huh.  I'm mostly glad that the detective said that him and his friends were no longer living in my apartment complex.  I was getting a little paranoid.

Police interrogation is an art form.  One I suck at, but there's skill involved in getting someone to confess to something when you would think they would have no interest in admitting their actions.

Accepting the mugging charge when he was arrested for something else confused me as well.  Truth be told my memory is shit and I wouldn't be a good witness.  I admitted as much when they were asking me for a description of the guy.  I'm guessing there was some convoluted plea bargain involved if Law and Order is to be believed.
