Must-haves for the NDS?
« on: August 19, 2009, 09:45:48 PM »
A cousin just gave me her NDS (Gold Zelda Edition).  What are some titles that I should check out?

I haven't owned a NDS for a few years.  The last NDS game I tried was New Super Bros.

How's Chrono Trigger on the DS?  I've always wanted to try Chrono Trigger but I don't know if I should play the PSX version on the PSP or the new DS version.

It's definitely worth it if you can find it cheap.

Also:

-Etrian Odyssey
-The World Ends With You
-Contra 4
-GTA: Chinatown Wars
-Advance Wars: Days of Ruin

You can emulate DS games, go nuts and find ones you like.

SMT: Devil Survivor

Ketsui (shmup...not the full game, just a boss rush, but very fun.)  I would DL this though, the game is apparently going for far too much.

What's a good adapter to play "backups" or old 16 bit roms?

I remember someone here saying that the DS was much better at emulating the SNES than the PSP.

What's a good SNES emulator for the PSP then?  There're lots of SNES games that I've yet to try.

Oh snap, SG.  It thought it was Fresh Prince at first due to that avatar.  The PSX version of CT is total garbage, filled with loading times.  Stick with the DS version, which is one of TOSE best port jobs.  It also has additional content--not AAA but serviceable.

Wouldn't loading times be faster though if the game was running off a memory stick?

It's still a garbage port.  PSX games still have load times, even off the mem stick.  PSP games do run optimized off the mem sticks.

You're probably right.  The DS probably loads most of the game right into the system ram, like most Nintendo cartridge systems.

The state of SNES emulation on the PSP is really woeful.  Everything runs pretty poorly unless you turn off the sound and music.
Why is SNES emulation so terrible on handhelds in general?

Because all they have to work with is snes9x and that is garbage compared to ZSNES

I thought ZSNES was open source as well? Or does it not play nice with other platforms or something?

snesX for PSP has gotten much better though.  plenty of games you can play at full speed.  but some key ones you can't -- Yoshi's Island and Tetris Attack.  But you can just play Yoshi's Island GBA on the PSP.

Here are the games that I've rented so far:  FF4, DQ5, Dawn of Sorrow and The World Ends with You.  The RPGS weren't that great.

FF4 and DQ5 felt archaic and the 3D graphics were :yuck .  I wish they had kept the 2d graphics.  3D on the DS simpy look like garbage compared to the PSP.

TWEWY was a little better in presentation but I didn't dig the gameplay or the story.

Luckily, Dawn of Sorrow was pretty fun.  I like the fact that it's much closer to Symphony of the Night than Rondo of Blood.

I think I'm gonna buy the whole Castlevania series on the DS.  Is there any GBA Castlevania I should be getting as well?

I think it's more to do on how each program was coded. porting zsnes requires like a complete overhaul, compared to snes9x which is just drag n drop (so to speak).

That sucks. I have a huge boner for 16-bit, and I was always under the impression that the PSP fully supported SNES emulation. I duno know where I got that idea >:(

Definitely pick up Aria of Sorrow for GBA, it's by far the best handheld release of the series. And I don't know how it was received here, but I hated Order of Ecclesia on DS.

One thing that I like the about the DS is that its screens are fantastic for gaming.   Although the PSP has much better graphics, part of that is negated by the dreadful ghosting and over reflectiveness of its screen (I have the 2000 model).

The DS screens are noticeably faster and brighter than the PSP's.  It's surprising that Nintendo got this right when they're the company that traditionally skimps on hardware.

Valkyrie Profile DS seems like a blast so far, albeit a bit easy for SRPG veterans. Story is very melancholy as well, if that's your thing. Great artwork by Kou/You Yoshinari, though the music is mostly taken from VP1 so far.

What are those Orcs and Elves games? I think I saw them in the store but they looked like budget dungeon crawler RPGs.

Get all 3 Metriodvanias. Trust me on this one.

And Etrian Odyssey is the best game on the system

The Castlevania games are great. I also like the Professor Layton series.

And get Mario Kart DS. It's the best MK game imo. Other games I liked are FF3, FF4 and Peggle DS.

Some of those older DS or GBA games are pretty hard to find.  I might have to the get the freeware versions.

Is the M3 adapter compatible with GBA games?
