When will the zombie fad be over?
« on: August 20, 2009, 10:44:56 AM »
Because I'm about ready for it to be.  There's like 8 different zombie games coming out this Fall, a few movies, The Walking Dead on AMC (ugh, Darabont), seems like every writer has to cram a zombie in there somewhere.  I dunno about you guys, but I've just about had my fill of this particular subgenre.

Hopefully soon. I think it needs a pinnacle achievement, but some would argue that this has already come with The Walking Dead comic.

I've been a fan of zombie stuff since watching the Fulci Zombie, Dawn of the Dead, and Return of the Living Dead back in the mid-80s, but enough already.  It peaked with 28 Days (shut up, they're fucking zombies), the DotD remake and Shaun IMO, and everything afterward has just been a slight variation on those movies.

Walking Dead is good but a bit overrated.  Kirkman bites off a lot of other sources, and he overdoes it with his tendency to repeat in dialogue what we're already seeing in the panel.  Every issue has to end with something horrible and shocking happening to one of the group now, too, which to me lessens the impact.  He should probably think about wrapping up the series.

Zombies are the perfect enemies. Slow and lumbering but most importantly, unoffensive to any ethnic group. Couple that with the fact that every human agrees that they need to be destroyed and bam.... you have a bunch of unoffensive violent games.

There have been multiple zombie movies every year since the late 60's, although it has increased in frequency in the last ten years or so.

As the quality in the movies games etc. keeps declining, so will the appetite for them. Eel, you're old enough to remember the onslaught of post-Star Wars sci-fi movies, whose VHS boxes littered the landscape at your local video store. Zombie flicks are especially long lived, just because of the ability to make one with very little money.

Not trying to lay blame at your feet, but I find it's easier to be less annoyed by a product over-saturation, by simply not watching, buying or renting the stuff after it overstays it's welcome.

Zombies are slow and rush you in hordes.  Most of the zombie games coming out now are twin stick shooters like Geo Wars, just instead of shapes, zombies.  I'd consider Call of Duty Zombies to be the same as those arcade style games.  L4D is the only one of those games that is fun for me.

Dead Rising is still the best zombie game.  Dead Rising 2 is the only upcoming zombie game I want.  The reason those games are so good is because they focus on the positive aspects of zombies, like everyone being dead and you being able to look and kill freely.  There is also that movie Zombieland that is basically the same idea as a movie, but whatever, it's more fun when it's a game.

Hopefully never.

By the way, Zombieland looks great. And World War Z is being adapted for film.

... I have to go with prior posters who said vampires are more in vogue that zombies right now.

That wouldn't work.

World War Z is certainly satire, but not straight-up comedy (save for the mansion part) and interwoven into a dark, gripping global story.  His father doesn't have the chops to direct something like that.  Thankfully, it's in Brad Pitt's hands, so he'll pick a decent director.

Marc Forster [Monster's Ball, Finding Neverland, Stranger than Fiction, Kite Runner, and Quantum of Solace] is currently attached as the director of World War Z.

Pretty amazing book, even though vampires/zombies are getting old.

How so?  I mean you can only kinda count Twilight.....but that'd be like saying Hannah Montana is really in vogue.  There's no mass appeal, just one really ravenous niche fanbase.

If Robert Downey Jr does get cast in The Vampire Chronicles, well then look out.

I hadn't seen previews for those other flicks.  Is True Blood really that big?  I only have 1-2 co-workers that watch it.....I kinda stopped following HBO shows after Deadwood/Sopranos ended.

Yeah, it's pretty huge.

There are ton of dumb vampire movies coming out within the year. It's begging to hit its stride.

It's weird how instantly tired I get when Vampires/Zombies are mentioned, there is nothing that bores me more.

The former I thought Anne Rice explored it near it's end (for goood or bad) but no one would keep going back to that well.

The later, well zombies are cool and all but after 28 days and Shaun there is near nothing to be done. I am planning on eventurally reading World War Z just to finallly complete my Trivial Pursuit zombie pie. Also maybe Pride and Prejudice and Zombies just for the fun factor.

I'm not really into the genre but are there any good ones where there's intercontinental traveling? Something like The Stand where you've got this band of people trying to reach some important location. Most of the Zombie movies I know about just deal with being holed up in some building.
