WET demo
« on: August 21, 2009, 12:02:48 AM »
Not sure how long this is out.  Saw it on the euro psn store.

This game offends me in every way possible.  It's like the western equivalant to the over the top retardness of Dante except with Dante you can laugh it off at the silly Japanese and here it's just horribly embarrassing to to play.  Stranglehold was leagues better than this.  I wonder how many millions they spent making this crappy game.

What's exactly wrong with it?  I thought it looked fun in the preview videos.

They had a playable demo at Quakecon, but it didn't really look all that interesting so I didn't play it.

Didn't WET's developer have a really hard time finding a publisher?

I'll give it a download and see what's up with it though.

Sounds nice n' awful!

Quote
I cant believe Bethesda is behind this, it is possibly the worst shoot em up action game I've ever played. I've seen the videos but after playing the game today I wouldn't pay $9.99 for it regardless of how much more content is in it this game is not worth anyone's time. It should be a PSN download at best. The graphics are terrible, and the gameplay is bad. The characters they show in the cutscenes are typical morons with cheesy 1980's voices over a bad script.

I expected much better from Bethesda hell Oblivion and Fallout are some of the best games ever made, this game will probably receive review scores of about 4/10.

The swordplay is bland at best, and the gunplay is extremely weak. Running up walls, or jumping gets you into a bullet time like mode but its just done very poorly. The AI is bad, they just stand and shoot at you, like I said the graphics look like a PS2 title. Maybe it is a Downloadable game I'm not sure, I hope so because if its not then Bethesda is taking a huge loss with this title. Its too bad because the screenshots actually looked pretty good. This far into production nothings going to change before release.

Try the demo, and be thankful you dont have to purchase it to try it.

Can't wait for the stupid puns that can be made from the title.

They didn't even develop the game(why can't people get past that), Ass2Mouth developed it. They're publishing it.

Also, Stranglehold was awesome. Don't compare these two.

I think everyone here knows that.  The GameFAQqer I quoted got corrected like immediately after his post.

I'm trying to play this but it's really hard to look at. They have that "grind house" flicker bullshit on without an option to turn it off.  My eyes are actually hurting playing this game.

wow, in super power red mode, they have grind house flicker with the wall textures shaking around.

:lol I had to look it up, apparently the company is named 'Artificial Mind and Movement' or A2M for short... wonder if whoever named the company realizes it's an acronym for 'Ass 2 Mouth'

So I tried the WET demo.  You play as Rubi, your typical action game heroine, meaning she has a mean look, poses like a super model, has some guns and a sword, and her pants are rammed way up her ass.  The game is incredibly generic and nothing stands out about it whatsoever.  I only say this because you just get the impression that they were trying to do the exact opposite, and failed.  Wet is a Max Payne/Dead To Rights/Stranglehold game, only it doesn't feel as polished.  The visuals are weird; it's like a high-resolution PS2 game, but with some good details here and there.  The "grindhouse" effect they are using looks awful and is annoying.

The core game play is actually okay, but everything is too easy.  When you jump, slide, or wall-run at enemies, everything slows down to the point that it is ridiculously easy to take out multiple targets at once with your pistols, no matter how far away they might be.  There was one point where you slide down a ladder while shooting at two enemies, and it was going so slowly that I didn't even realize I was moving downwards.  I stopped shooting at one enemy for a second, and he did nothing in retaliation.  Character deaths are hilariously bad.  At one point, I jumped when I should have wall-ran, and at the end of the awful death animation, Rubi let out a bizarre "BLAAHHH" that made me spit up my drink.

Things did get a little better when the training stuff ended and the game puts you in a open area with endlessly-respawning enemies (you have to destroy three spawn points to clear it), and gives you a reason to try and rack up combo kills (it refills your life), but there were never enough enemies to do anything more than rack up two or three hit combos.  After this, the game shows you "Rubi Vision" mode, which gets triggered when Rubi gets pissed off.  The environments then turn bright red, while Rubi and the enemies are rendered in a simplistic black and white "Sin City" style.  You then can run around at a faster speed and your handguns have rapid fire.  There were more enemies to kill in this area, and the flow of the game actually seemed a bit better; it also has a more violent tone, as enemies splatter tons of (white) blood and "explode" into black smoke when they are killed.  I would have preferred it if they made the entire game with this look instead; at least it would have stood out more.

Following the blood rage, the demo then ends with QTE-filled rail shooting car chase.  Even though it wasn't even that long, this felt too repetitive and somewhat dull thanks to the bland visuals.

The demo is clearly based on the initial mandatory "training area" of the game, so maybe in the final product, things pick up and it gets better, but this demo didn't exactly make me want to rush out to pick up WET.  Ultimately, the demo comes off as just another third person shooter that will bomb and hit the bargain bins in no time flat.

"Ass 2 Mouth" also made Spider-Man Friend Or Foe.  I bet Eel's GONNA LOVE THIS GAME!   ;)

I had no problem with the shooting, in fact I found it too easy to kill everyone, especially since one of your guns always auto-aims at enemies.  The sword controls felt totally off, however.  Not fluid at all.

I mean, this is far from being the best game in the world, but it seemed a hell of a lot better than say, X-Blades, quality-wise.

I'm listening to a Rebel FM podcast, and they point out that the one positive thing about this game is the way that it encourages Tony Hawk style combo tricks, stringing everything together for the most "stylish" kills.  The other bullet-time shooters don't really do this, since they limit how long you can go in slo-mo, but then with that said, the demo just doesn't do a good job of selling this.  They are making it sound better in the version that they played at Gamescon, but ultimately are saying it needs to be a budget-priced game.

Next up on the demo list: Mini Ninjas...

Like I posted before, the Rebel FM guys were really digging the Tony Hawk-style combo stuff you could do.  I liked hearing that, but the demo didn't seem to be polished enough to allow for any big types of "combos" to be done.

Uh, theres plenty of combo action. How high did you get? You're supposed to keep moving and tricking. Run on walls, slide, jump in the air.

Yeah, I covered all that before.  The big open section you get to never had enough enemies to get anything big going.

I'm going to download the 360 demo and see if its different.

I'm with green man.  I just really don't enjoy the jumping + shooting mechanics in this.  Strangehold NAILED the Max Payne mechanics.  It really felt like Max Payne with a new skin and shittier game design.  Wet feels like something different and I don't like it.

Yeah, sadly that's my impression as well.

I was surprised to see this thread originally, because I'd JUST watched a video preview of it from this year's E3. The game didn't look anywhere near as smooth, nor as good as it did in the demo. Maybe the guy demoing it had played it too much, because he didn't screw up, but the game just appeared really skanky and unpolished. The demo's plenty fun, and plenty polished.

That truck chase is the least annoying QTE-driven scene I've ever played. The tone is nice, the character design is funky and modern but still hits grindhouse style notes.
