During my recent brief stateside trip, I unfortunately sat through about 3/4ths of an episode of this "Megan Wants a Millionaire" program mentioned in connection with the killing. Though it was educational to see just how far American reality TV programming has sunk, how needy and disgusting even those with a substantial financial worth can become as they hunt for "love," I still couldn't stomach a full episode.
Even now as I think about these rich guys all swinging their monetary worth around like a cock, every one of them desperate to out-cool the other guys in front of these useless, plastic, vapid women, hoping that they'll win a chance take home a trophy bride, I feel sad. They're so unaware of themselves, and they don't know that they've all already lost.
I know that self-righteousness is one of the reasons people watch these shows. We used to watch Jerry Springer, having people come out and talk about, scream about, and fight about things that are in the past. Now we have reality show producers working up these willing rubes into a frenzy, so we can actually watch the prefabricated train wreck happen from multiple camera angles. We see just how far off balance these fame junkies are, and how unhealthy these b- and c-tier celebrities are.
Then again, I wonder how many of them are sitting at home now, lost in thought about how close they were to someone who snapped, or someone who had their teeth and fingertips pulled off, but was still able to identified by the serial number on her breast implants.
