The drink of (non-alcoholic) champions.
« on: August 22, 2009, 04:12:23 PM »

It's like Thor the thunder god jizzing sugar-coated lightning right in my mouth! Mmmm...Dr Pepper. It's the doctor that won't crap up your forum with lame threads about his girlfriend. And when you add the glass bottle and real sugar, it's outta this world, baybee. All sodas should be in glass bottles like the old days, I don't care if does cost more. The extra cost makes me feel like a king when I'm drinking it. And I don't care if the perceived difference between sugar and HFCS is mostly just a placebo effect, Dr Pepper can effect my placebo any time.   :drool

Mmm, vanilla coke was the best, I haven't seen it around in a long time though.
I don't think the sugar difference is a placebo effect. I noticed sodas in Mexico tasted way better without being told beforehand there was any difference.

I don't drink much soda, maybe once a month or so. But I do like root beer, cream soda, and Dr. Pepper. Funny thing is, root beer is sold as a "batsu game"/punishment drink. Like, "Lose the bet and you have to drink this crazy American soda that tastes like cough syrup." Which of course means I like the taste of Japanese cough syrup.

That's just syrup with soda water, right?

Have you ever noticed what the all-you-can-guzzle fountain drink machines at fast food places do? Hint:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
They mix syrup with soda water.

Huh, I heard they still have A&W restaurants in Okinawa. Must be an American GI thing.

There's a lot that's different with Okinawa. I feel like people here treat it as a different country, as though it's about 1/3 as foreign as Hawaii. (But then Japanese people treat Hawaii as though it's only 1/2 has foreign as the mainland US. "Hawaii-ken"... :smh)

What the hell is up with Japan's obsession with Hawaii, anyways? Is it the whole "We get to visit America, but Waikiki is so incredibly Japanese-friendly that we never really have to get out of our safety zone and deal with Americans" thing?

Haha. My wife and I ate at an okonomiyaki place a block off Waikiki beach, we were the only non-Japanese people there. Some of the tourists were a little weirded out that we were so comfortable with the whole thing.

I thought it was pretty funny how there were two Japanese news stations in addition to KIKU TV over there...

Do they even bother visiting the other islands then? I don't remember seeing many Japanese tourists when I visited Kauai in the mid-90s.

I didn't see many on The Big Island, but they were ready to give Japanese tour narration on the one bus tour we took. The guide jokingly started in Japanese, and I thought "Oh, good. The kids won't be bored now" and then the guide joked in English "Oh, sorry -- wrong language" and everyone except my kids laughed.  :(

On Maui there were a couple other Japanese family staying in the timeshare condo complex, but I didn't see many while out shopping.

Nowhere near the presence as on Oahu though, and in particular Waikiki and the Ala Moana mall area is central for Japanese tourists.
