Kodak Black just isn't clicking. It's like the ATL version of Red Cafe to me.

New Vince is out. Really surreal watching the way his coverage has gone from treating him like the rejected child of Odd Future (remember when rap collectives made a comeback for like a year and a half in 2011? why did that happen? idk it was cool though) to effortlessly cool and endlessly quotable rapguy in 2017

Yes indeed. Had no expectactions for it and it's amazing.

It's aight. It's an honest record from a dude who made a career out of braggadocios dishonesty. But there are a lot of old man-isms to deal with. Too much of the sound space is taken up by the dude not understanding these darn kids and their Instatweets. He dips in an out of old themes, but the stuff where he focuses on new shit like dealing with being a family man, or a business owner or even the bar reserved for Ye is good. This is probably the realest Shawn Carter record out there. Like the whole project is a sequel to December 4th.

The album is a lot better than I or apparently most people expected it to be, and after MCHG I assume expectations were pretty low. I dunno. I really liked it at first but after a few listens the shine has kinda worn off. It's a lot better materialistically than anything he's done since AG, but it still fits completely in line with the 'calculated Jay' we've known since Blueprint. For as 'personal' as the writing is supposed to be it still comes off as a kind of sterile/rote answer to Lemonade.

Also I'm annoyed as fuck by the phrase "grown man rap" becoming a thing now that this album is out. Get the fuck outta here. This might be the deciding factor for me switching to the 'Nas Won' side.

Fwiw it's not a one to one thing as far as streams to album sales, it's something like 1500 streams equals an album sale. It's just hilarious that it's so important to Jay that he gets those numbers. With MCHG he tried to bake it in with the Samsung gimmick, but Billboard didn't count it, and now he's willing to just flat-out give his album away for free, which I'm guessing still counts towards sales since it's technically a discount. Funny coming from Mr "men lie, women lie, numbers don't."

I hate that one stream counts as a sale now. Feels too calculated for record companies to manufacture bigger headlines of success.

I'm not too well versed on the algorithm and how they compile it, so I'll just leave it at that.

lol that's literally why they did it. No one was selling anymore (unless you're Adele, T Swift)

Sprint bought a million copies as a part of their deal with Tidal/Jay. RIAA counts sales whether a customer or business is responsible.

Man, that Prodigy mural defacement got me feeling some kind of way. The dude's music peaked before half these guys were born, but like him or not, he was an indelible part of our shared culture. It's fucked up that NYC can't even respect its own history or that Twitter had so many jokes about a guy who made such a mark on the history of a genre. Fuck rap

Sounds like it's some grimy QB shit. Folks on IG and Coli are saying Sherm The Worm (you've prob heard of him from various Nas, Camron, Cormega, etc songs), a blood leader currently locked up, is behind it. Prodigy had various beefs and people clowned him for years because he came to Queens when he was like 12, so they claim he's not really from QB.

I mean...I'm also sad to see Frannie and Ali go too but his point seemed pretty weird. If you're going to criticize Stretch & Bobbito as being legacy acts/living off the past/etc sure the same could apply to Ali too? And even if we just focus on his retort that he "meant" to only focus on journalists (ie replacing a journalist with a non-journalist) couldn't you argue Stretch & Bob were rap journalists? I had an article of The Source or some other mag where Bobbito had a very comprehensive interview of Nas in 1995.

Besides...this is going to be a new show, not a continuation of Microphone Check.

I didn't really see it either. I guess you can make the argument that Ali is vetted by virtue of his experience in the industry, but Stretch and Bobbito have way more experience as broadcasters.  I'm guessing he's more upset at the prospect of having old dudes acting as gatekeepers to such a youth-skewed genre? I dunno
