Interesting developments. A GAFer created this pretty dope beat and gave it to Riff Raff (lol); he was even in the room as Riff Raff recorded the video

then this week, a British rapper sampled the track and it currently has 200k views

pretty cool.

Get on Down announced their new prestige edition release.  It's Nas's Illmatic and it sounds pretty great.  Comes w/ a 48 Pages hardcover book.  $20 for the vinyl, $35 for the CD.  CD is gold plated (ha) and comes in a cherrywood box.  Cray.

SPEAKING OF CRAY, New Meyhem Lauren is out and it's damn good stuff.

Interscope Reportedly Cancels Chief Keef’s Tour

There might not be so much love for Sosa after all. There is a rumor going around saying that Interscope has cancelled Chief Keef’s tour due to poor ticked sales. All the concerts on the eastcoast have defiantly been canceled, stay tuned for further updates.

I dunno, Love Soza is really well put together

I'm not a huge CK fan (I live in NYC so I have plenty of people operating in that sphere who are damn good) but I can't deny that song is well put together

I mean, it's basically the Gangnam Style of rap music with 21 MILLION views.

I'll do my aoty list tomorrow. SOTY wise though it would probably look something like this (no order outside of the first four)

1. Love Sosa - Chief Keef
2. Darq E Freaker ft. Danny Brown - Blueberry (Pills & Cocaine)
3. Money, Clothes, Hoes - Freddie Gibbs
4. Hands On The Wheel - Schoolboy Q ft ASAP Rocky
Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe - Kendrick Lamar
New God Flow - Kanye West ft. Ghostface Killah, Pusha T, Big Sean
Don't Die - Killer Mike
Mr. MFN eXquire - Position of Passion
Reagan - Killer Mike
The Hard - Freddie Gibbs
Mercy - Kanye West
Hip Hop - DJ Khaled ft DJ Premier, Nas, Scarface
Cold Facts - Ka
Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst - Kendrick Lamar
Ali Bombaye - Game ft 2 Chainz, Rick Ross
Traumatized - Meek Mill
Go Get It - TI
Bye Baby - Nas
You Know Who You Are - Oddisee
Amsterdam - Rick Ross
Pistolier - Roc Marciano
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Bands A Make Her Dance - Juicy J :shh
[close]

First four are the songs that literally knocked me out of my seat this year. First time I heard the Danny Brown track I went crazy. Money Clothes Hoes...listen to that in a car while cruising around late at night, I swear that shit made me want to drive to NY and get Dipset on the track at gun point

The backpacker in me probably would hurl at half that stuff but I gotta be real. That's the shit that made the biggest impression on me

Gunplay didn't just kill "Cartoon & Cereal". He killed MMG's "Power Circle", rapping about seabass and santeria candles in a cipher of middlebrow yacht rappers who are still stuck on keys and hate and hard work and Jordans. (Kendrick was there too, and though he is not a middlebrow yacht rapper, he did get killed.) Gunplay killed "Bible on the Dash", pulling focus out of his lonely last stogie. He killed "Take This" and he killed his Bugatti's engine slowly by settling for 87 octane. He killed "Fuck Shit in My Life" and all the bottom feeders, snakes, and centipedes that lurked within. He killed Billy Ocean and wore his skin on Trina's "Beam". He killed everything else then he went fishing. He does not have a release date yet.

Quote
The separatist college radio indie rap groupthink hold that poptimists fought so hard to end (via a thousand positive Mike Jones reviews in the mid-2000s) has officially reemerged. When Lil B and Odd Future retreated to the embrace of their insular fanbases they left the floodgates open for some seriously sketchball acts to become blog and Tumblr darlings. While it's nice to see Killer Mike finally get some recognition for being overtly political over El-P beats after years of being overtly political over beats that weren't produced by El-P, the rest of the rap that was uniquely propped up on indie PR machine/cool kid blog circuit this year was ephemeral, amateurish, or even outright depressing. I won't name names since you guys seem to love them. Or at least you love reblogging their photos on Tumblr and getting free drinks at their Heineken sponsored shows. Have fun, drive safely and just know that none of this stuff is notable or interesting or entertaining to anybody who was listening to rap music back before 2008.
guilty as charged.

I liked Trillin' which was released last year but this doesn't really do it for me though it does do a good job of rounding up people who I hadn't heard elsewhere giving a good overview of Chicago outside of King Louie and CK.

I've given it a deeper listen and I actually really like the new Tree quite a bit.

Dat Chevy, Nobody and Chicago Nights are the stand outs to me for right now.

Picked up both of the new Milo EPs and they're fucking weird.  It's like where backpacker rap went to die.  It's strange and surreal and filled with references to wrestling and cartoos and philosophers.  They're songs about nothing while being songs about everything which leads to being not very substantial sounding.

The best track is folk-metaphysics, 2nd ed.

Sounds like Azealia Banks' career just ended
Quote
The rapper Azealia Banks’ social media meltdown last week — culminating in her calling the gay blogger Perez Hilton a “messy taco” — continues to suffer fallout. This morning brings rumors that Interscope Records has dropped the rapper. Banks has not apologized for her remarks. Indeed, she’s amplified them, noting: “A taco is not a homosexual male. A taco is any male who acts like a female. There’s a BIG difference.” A GLAAD spokesman this morning indicated that she has also ignored attempts from the advocacy firm to make amends for the homophobic slur.

“In this case, it was not a slip of the tongue but a very deliberate statement that she has defended,” said Rich Ferraro, GLAAD’s vice-president of communications. “There’s certainly a trickle-down effect for young people when a celebrity they follow defends the use of words like this. It enables them to use words like that on the playground.”

I don't think many rappers has evolved actually; plenty of big rappers still use the word, from Eminem to Lil Wayne, with no consequences. The issue with Banks is that the only men who listen to her music are gay; ok maybe a few straight guys are fans, I like a couple of her songs, etc...but the point is that her base is basically the some gay guys and straight women. Therefore she has basically pissed off half of her audience, if not more considering many straight  female dance pop fans are pro-gay rights. Female pop artists get a lot of love from the gay community, and when someone disrespects that community they get shitted on (see: Fantasia).

There are some rappers who have bucked the stereotypical homophobia of the genre, such as Kanye West and ASAP Rocky; Drake comes to mind too.

A lot of these new hipster/twitter trend rappers have to walk on eggshells because their audience base is hypersensitive.  Conversely, Eminem's core base is pissed off white teenagers in the midwest.  One rapper can get away with a lot more things than the other.

I did for a bit.  I asked DJ Muggs about how he got Dizzee Rascal on his album because he's basically a gargantuan pop star in the UK and he told me that he (Muggs) and his brother do the Gumball Rally every year and last year he was with Bun B playing him some new music and Bun B said "I have to get this stuff to Dizee"  Turns out Bun B and Dizzee are close friends.  So it turns out that Muggs did 5 tracks with Rascal for Rascal's new album (which may or may not show up, Muggs didn't know) and in exchange, Dizzee did one for Muggs's album.  Because I DJ I talked to him a bit about his DJ set up because he was using Serato Scratch and a controller but his controller was doing a million different things.  My conversation with Primo was like 3 seconds. "omg hi. huge fan." "thanks."

oh, and it's the 20th anniversary of Jump Around so he showed of two mixes for that.  one of which was full on dubstep the other was trap.  I, uh, wasn't a fan of either.  He also played a new Cyprus Hill song which was pretty good and he is also working on a full album with Action Bronson and Meyhem Lauren, so he played a snippet of that.  It sounded dope.  It will be both bass music and new york traditional dusty sample hip hop.
