Yup I've seen him live, got to meet Hex Murda too. The live band really makes it awesome, especially the percussion.

He's steadily improving as a rapper and has steadily evolved his music beyond soul loops with live drums on top. One note of criticism I'd have is that when rapping, he often sounds like he's rapid fire reciting words off the page/phone/whatever. If I was in the studio I'd be like dude, loosen up a bit.

In many ways his growth reminds me of Oddisee, who also started out as a somewhat awkward rapper over dope soul samples.

Biggie Smalls Too Fat to Have Corner Named For Him, Committee Member Says

CLINTON HILL — Community board members objected to naming a corner for the late rapper Biggie Smalls because, according to some, he was a criminal, a misogynist — and too fat to be honored.

CB2 committee member Lucy Koteen said she "looked up the rapper's history" and read what she had learned to the full board Tuesday night.

"He started selling drugs at 12, he was a school dropout at 17, he was arrested for drugs and weapons charge, he was arrested for parole violations, he was arrested in North Carolina for crack cocaine, in 1996 he was again arrested for assault, he had a violent death and physically the man is not exactly a role model for youth," she said. "I don't see how this guy was a role model and frankly it offends me."

Kenn Lowy, board member and owner of the Brooklyn Heights Cinema, said he did not appreciate that the rapper, whose birth name was Christopher Wallace, referred to women with derogatory names in his music.

But the real stumbling block to the effort to co-name the corner of St. James Place and Fulton Street "Christopher Wallace Way" is that Letitia James — a councilwoman and candidate for public advocate — has yet to issue a letter of support, which is necessary for the proposal to go forward.

So it was "another day, another struggle" for LeRoy McCarthy, 45, who began the movement to name the intersection for Notorious B.I.G.

McCarthy said after the meeting that "board members should not hold Wallace's physical appearance nor how he died against him."

"There are many artists that share stories in a vernacular that their audiences understand," said McCarthy in response to the complaint about misogynistic lyrics.  "Biggie used the language from the streets he grew up in to convey what he wanted to say."

Wallace was raised by a single mother at 226 St. James Place in Clinton Hill. He went on to become an award-winning rapper and Brooklyn icon. He was killed in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles in 1997.

McCarthy presented the board with letters of support from two local churches, a mosque, a nearby block association, several local businesses and more than 1,000 comments from people all over the world who signed an online petition in support of the co-naming.

The issue was tabled Tuesday by the board's Transportation and Public Safety Committee until James or her successor issues the letter of support.

James did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

James' likely successor, Laurie Cumbo, who is running unopposed for the 35th District City Council seat, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Respect is good as is Self-Induced.  I bought Self Induced on a whim not knowing a thing about ML and came away impressed. The first few songs really didn't grab me but by the end it's just excellent stuff.

Went to some get together last week and met some guy. We're talking about music and I ask him what kind of music he prefers. He's like,"rap, but not 2013 rap. I won't have none of that 2013 shit" as if such an statement is original or carries meaning. Anyone else just feel like people who talk like that can't be assed to find good hip hop? If you can't find hip hop you like in 2013 and you're a fan, I just don't know what to say.

Whatever.

Following the VMAs, Kendrick and his team attended Diddy's afterparty, a party where J. Cole and Diddy reportedly got into a confrontation over Kendrick's "Control" verse. While neither Kendrick nor his team would acknowledge the incident, Kendrick did explain his decision to go to the afterparty prior to attending the event, saying, "I only go when there's a point. Usually the point is just nikkas drinking. But walking through the club the week after I released the 'Control' verse? That's a point!"

So refreshing to see a mainstream rapper with some balls. :rejoice

You should listen to their interview on Juan Epstein. I've never heard a less noteworthy artist demanding respect and homage before. Dude literally made G Rap listen to all his albums before working together because he felt as an established artist, he deserved "mutual respect." Refused to do one song because that would be disrespectful, thus convincing G Rap they should do an entire project.

Also it was weird hearing him answer stuff for G Rap, as in "G Rap loves Boardwalk Empire, tell em G Rap..."

here is the Armand Hammer show.  Our senior editor who has been doing hip hop writing for over a decade called it a damn good interview so that's cool

http://www.imposemagazine.com/bytes/armand-hammer-on-newtown-radio

if you want to skip the music, jump to about an hour and 20 minutes for just the interview.  they were running a bit late.

Can I ask a quick old man question?

Do people actually like Kanye the rapper? I mean I think he sucks.

I know he's a hell of a producer and he's banging KK so that's pretty cool, but he can't do shit lyrically anymore. I tried his latest album for all of 12 seconds before I x'd out of it and put on the Lost Boyz.

Edit: I think he has a shitty voice, limited ability to string together more than 2 rhymes, and he talks about stupid shit.
YMMV
