My 2015 list is taking forever, largely because I'm spending so much time debating #3 and #4. I have my top two albums picked but the next two spots have become serious business for me lol. Even when I set out to determine the other albums on the list I keep coming back to these two records...

Bruh I relistened to my top 13 albums like 3 times each over the past few weeks. I really didn't ever decide, I just picked them randomly out of a hat (literally).

I've been thinking about why I fux with dude all of a sudden when it hit me: Kevin Gates reminds me of Gibbs in many ways. Rapid fire, deep melodic flows. Doesn't really have any projects I'd compare to Gibbs quality wise but overall I like his shit.

Yeah Gates is close to what Gibbs would be if he was in the MCH lane 95% of the time instead of just 10%.

A little less panicked about Swish after this
https://soundcloud.com/kanyewest/real-friends-no-more-parties-in-la-snipped

Also not shocked to find out the drums on the Real Friends were done by Havoc. The reverb drenched sidestick and the kicks sound like they could be from a lost Murda Muzik b-side.  No More Parties beat is by Madlib.

I like the production on both tracks, not really impressed by Kanye on the mic here; sounds like Big Sean wrote this. Gives me College Dropout vibes flow wise but it's kinda just there. Ty$ sounds dope on it. That Madlib snippet is cool.

Not sure what this says about Swish. Could still be a bunch of wack trap shit.

It's a big step up from the last few songs subject matter wise. I didn't really expect him to go back to being personal and vulnerable after the latest singles and Yeezus.

Also what on earth would make you think Big Sean wrote a song about Kanye's cousin? I know you refuse to give Ye credit for anything at all, but wouldn't it make more sense to give the feature/known ghostwriter Ty Dollar Sign that credit?

What do the personal lyrics have to do with who wrote it? I assume you know Royce 59 wrote The Message for Dre. Kanye has always used ghostwriters, but he has also written parts of his bars as well. I'm just saying when I listen to it, it sounds like a Big Sean record to me. I could be entirely wrong but that's just what I got from it fam.

lol Dre literally never wrote lyrics ever though and this is coming from the dude who's written Big Brother, Hey Mama, Blame Game etc which are all in the same vein. I mean we'll see who wrote it if it makes the album but honestly it's more baffling to me that someone would pick up Big Sean from it since he has no identifiable 'sound' outside of being really corny. I mean he's a twitter meme for being generic af at this point

Yeah I've given up on having expectations as to when his shit comes out now. Didn't expect 3 solid albums after the great leak of last summer, but I got them; he spent the last part of the year hyping hytunes, which he's admittedly not close to finishing. Anytime new stuff comes out it's a pleasant surprise

Ka is the best lyricist in rap today. Nothing incredibly complicated but he hits all the things on my check list: storytelling, evocative, wordplay beyond similes, etc. And he's getting better at writing choruses and producing.

2015 top ten (hip hop)  :doge

Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly

Rarely does an album reach so far and accomplish nearly everything it attempts. An all star cast of jazz musicians provide an impressive canvas on which Kendrick lays his soul bear. All the contradictions, anger, depression, and triumph results in a truly epic work.

Dr. Yen Lo - Days With Yen Lo

The best lyricist in rap returns. Preservation's dark production fits Ka's delivery perfectly.

Earl Sweatshirt - I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside

Earl turns inward, and the brutal honesty of his lyrics and moody production results in his most complete and impressive project yet.

Vince Staples - Summertime 06

Staples strips west coast gangsta rap of its "super nicca" nature while exploring black masculinity. Torn between the streets, his conscious, and the lore handed down from his gangsta family members, Staples weaves in and out just trying to survive another day. No I.D. deserves a lot of fucking credit for helping Vince evolve as an artist.

Slum Village - Yes!

Hard drums, booming bass. Detroit hip hop. If you had told me this was an unreleased 90s Slum album that was recently discovered I'd believe you. Rap groups rarely drop a great album so far from their debut but Slum Village pulled it off effortlessly.

Billy Woods - Today I Wrote Nothing

I still don't know how to describe Billy Woods but he did it again. Abstract vignette that touch nearly every emotion you can imagine. If you wanted a DOOM album in 2015 maybe this will interest you.

Freddie Gibbs - Shadow Of A Doubt

Gibbs has it all. Dope flow, melody, and a great ear for beats. That downtempo trap shit is perfect for him.

Alchemist - Israeli Salad

Real talk: I don't remember the last year Alchemist didn't release something awesome. It's not Russian Roulette but it's still a very dope project.

Oddisee - The Good Fight

Too preachy in hindsight but you can't deny the dope production and solid rhymes.

Knxledge - Hud Dreems

I can't think of another beat producer who gets possessed by the ghost of Dilla more than Knxledge. I've probably listened to Aintitovr on loop more than any song in years.
