I'm kind of stanning a bit posting two in a row by the same group but fuck it.

"Splendor & Misery is an Afrofuturist, dystopian concept album that follows the sole survivor of a slave uprising on an interstellar cargo ship, and the onboard computer that falls in love with him. Thinking he is alone and lost in space, the character discovers music in the ship’s shuddering hull and chirping instrument panels. William and Jonathan’s tracks draw an imaginary sonic map of the ship’s decks, hallways, and quarters, while Daveed’s lyrics ride the rhythms produced by its engines and machinery. In a reversal of H.P. Lovecraft’s concept of cosmic insignificance, the character finds relief in learning that humanity is of no consequence to the vast, uncaring universe. It turns out, pulling the rug out from under anthropocentrism is only horrifying to those who thought they were the center of everything to begin with. Ultimately, the character decides to pilot his ship into the unknown—and possibly into oblivion—instead of continuing on to worlds whose systems of governance and economy have violently oppressed him."

Yachty is 19, which means he was 13 years old in 2010. His entire concept of hip hop is 808s And Heartbreaks, Gucci, Lil B, Lil Wayne, etc. That's the stuff he listened to during his formative years, during that time when most people get kinda serious about music as an expression of personal identity, and also get exposed to stuff their peers like. If you're a dust head who can't comprehend this you lost.

My only problem with Yachty is him being proud of not knowing the genre's history. To me that reminds me of shit trash rock bands used to say ("I've never listened to blues music, that shit is basic") in the 90s and 00s. But no, I don't think he has an obligation to take a crash course in rap and listen to Grandmaster Caz before he can pick up a mic.

I don't think mentioning that you don't know five songs by two guys that died before he developed object permanence qualifies as being 'proud' of not knowing rap history. It's hard to say one way or the other since it's one out quote with no real context, but it makes sense that those would be his go-to references for that era.

"Real artists are students of the game first" is such complete bullshit. Arguably some the least interesting rappers are the ones who have an encyclopedic knowledge of rap and box themselves into those conventions, content to never explore anything interesting (eg 98% of rappers from NYC from 2004 to 2012)

You can really tell Drake is that dude in HS who wasn't getting pussy at all. Now he's on top of the world, getting most of the pussy he wants but is still awkward af and corny underneath the facade.

Reminds me of a lot of dudes I know in finance.

It was funny to see, but she just seems like the type who'd rather not do that type of shit for the public while he's a soft ass bird. That's still his girl so I'm sure he doesn't care.

He's so annoyingly corny though.

Dunno brehs. First track is great but after that it essentially fizzles out. At least based on the first listen, I won't make a definitive statement/view until I live with it for more. The mumbling and seeming lack of focus (in stark contrast to Kendrick and Jay Rock, who murder both tracks)...I guess drugs don't make everyone better.

Production reminds me of Outkast which is cool.

Way Back is my favorite so far.

that 2nd half is crazy. one thing i like about travis is that his album tracks sound like a concert version w/ all the bells and whistles. it isnt like how kanye just soups the songs up for the live performance.

I've heard SO many stories of labels being dumb as fuck and nearly torpedoing artists careers/making them turn interesting tracks mediocre. :lol Record industry has been some 'too big to fail' shit for a while it'd seem.

This was an interesting story but at least it involved some actual actions.
I think the bigger problem we see nowadays is just inaction. Failure to capitalize on hype or to get a project out. Of course, you could argue that despite a considerable wait, the good rappers are gonna succeed even if it takes them a while to release their major label debut (J.Cole) but how the fuck do you mess around with Jay Electronica or someone like that. Even Desiigner could've moved units in the post-TLOP/Panda hype (but that situation is a bit different I suppose given Kanye's assumed involvement leading to unpredictability)
as the saying goes,
you either die a GOAT or live long enough to see yourself become Lupe Fiasco
