Dunno what other thread to put this where people would actually care, but Solange's new album is pretty great.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/10/05/health/kid-cudi-depression-rehab/index.html

Quote
Cudi revealed on Facebook late Tuesday that he had gone to rehab on Monday, after grappling with anxiety and depression throughout his life.

He wrote that he didn't know what "peace feels like" or how to relax.
"My anxiety and depression have ruled my life for as long as I can remember and I never leave the house because of it. I cant make new friends because of it. I dont trust anyone because of it and Im tired of being held back in my life. I deserve to have peace."

Has Vince Staples ever opened up about his abortion views?  It's been on my mind for a minute, but the vid of the woman complaining about Norf Norf makes this seem like a good time to bring it up.  I never watched her video and I don't really want to give her the ad revenue.  The whole thing could have been satire for all I know.

The topic first piqued my interest on Shyne Coldchain Vol 2.  Here're the first couple bars to Earth Science.  For those unfamiliar with the track, it's about a failed high school romance.

Quote from: Vince Staples
Bitches born with shovels
guess that devil in disguise make you more than a woman

It's not explicitly about abortion right away.  Take a look the last verse though

Quote from: Vince Staples
As for you I always think about our kids that you killed
understand that at the time you didn't think we was real
but as a man I felt I let you down
we was on our second child
that you seen as a mistake before I got to reconcile

On Norf Norf there's the line "folks need Porches/hoes need abortions".

Disc 2 give us Surf.
Quote from: Vince Staples
More black kids killed from a pill than the feds in the projects
in the Planned Parenthood playing God with your mom check
you ain't even been to prom yet

By no means would he be the first pro-life rapper, but it's no less disappointing.

Gone, what'd he say

esssentially that he was young, and stressed. That they expected more from him than he had.  They wanted him to stay in NY until shit was really real/launched but they had impressed/colored him so much he wanted to go home and get his shit together. He basically blamed the falling out on misunderstanding on miscommunication and him being young & not from NY.

Kendrick also has multiple lines with similar views. I tend to view this in context of where a rapper is from. If you're from Compton, Detroit, wherever the fuck Kodak is from, etc your entire concept of life and death is very different from a normal person's. Is it surprising that someone born amongst death and murder doesn't really distinguishes the nuances of it by the time they reach adolescence? Whether it's abortion or cops killing someone or the homie's killing someone, it's all death to them. And they either become numb to it or break.

In short I'm not mad or shaking my head even though I disagree. Whereas I feel pretty justified in shaking my head whenever I hear that Common song about abortion lol.

I guess I'd have to hear it cuz this doesn't really clarify anything to me. From the title I assumed he would be talking about dissing yams then putting out the RIP Yams track with Rocky, did they reconcile or is this some old frankenstein shit?

The album feels like some shit a member of the OVO refugee tent camps would make if given the freedom. Lots of ideas, some of which are really good, but largely a project that is forgettable and aimless. I'll continue listening and give it sit with it though. He's a guy that seems best suited for writing for other people.

The production is REALLY good though. Dahi and the usual TDE folks.

I only learned who Donald Goines is earlier this year .  Over the past few months I've been noticing a bunch of references to his work in hip-hop.  What are his best books?
