I think the metroid wiimakes run in gamecube mode
« on: August 27, 2009, 08:00:11 AM »
I picked up the trilogy and its got a cool box blah blah.  My Wii hasn't been able to read my discs lately.  It'll maybe get to a title screen menu of any game before giving up and giving me an error screen.  I boot up the Trilogy to see how far I can get before it craps out again.  So its really weeeeeiiiird that Metroid Prime with its constant streaming off the disc is giving me no problems whatsoever.  I just beat the tutorial frigrate without a hiccup or crash.  The loads between rooms were actually FASTER than what I remember.  I literally think its running on the gamecube backwards compatibility mode because I don't know what I'm talking about. Hurp dutp.

I've always loved Prime for its atmosphere, catchy ambient music, good level design, good art, knowing to shut the hell up 99% ,etc.  But the nagging controls were a mark against the game.  Now, they're silky smooth and make the game much better.  Its awesome using free look just to survey your environments without the original constraints.  However some enemies and bosses have attacks that require the quick dodge during lock-on to avoid.  Otherwise the button locks the screen which makes it quicker to hit switches and targets.  The morph ball jump tied to waggle was added though, probably for noobs who cant figure out a double bomb jump.

I am unsure about getting these.  I have the three games already and the extras aren't enticing enough.

MP1 was utterly amazing.  Probably my favourite game of that gen until RE4.

MP2, meh with its dark world.

MP3, I like, but I play for a few hours every few months and then put it down, I'm not sure why.  I heard the last few hours of the game are fantastic in particular.

MP2 had the coolest of all MP levels, though: Sanctuary Fortress.

I loved MP2's light world.  It was as awesome as any MP world.

:bow Metroid Prime & Echoes :bow2

Amazing experiences. Playing MP1 for the first time which was by the way my first console FPS, I was simply stunned. I felt like I entered another dimension of enjoyment. The music, the graphics, the environments... never to be recreated again in any other game.

true, too bad MP3 was shit though.

2 better 3? I don't think so.

3 is terrible. Emphasizing combat, two worlds with what amount to the same 3 rooms repeated over and over again, shitty friends, inferior music, horrible bosses including the worst ending to a trilogy ever.

The only part of MP3 that wasn't really that good was the first hour or two, where they tried to make it like Halo. Everything else was pretty good, though more linear than it should have been.

What was the ending? I couldnt muster my way through the 3rd game. It is obivous the best talent has left retro.

Well it basically stems from the fact that the boss battles in the game suck so there is this huge build up over 3 games for the final battle with Prime/Dark Samus which ends up being somehow worse than any of the other boss fights in the game. Plus they add in a battle with a mother brain that sucks right after it where the only challenge is not dying because you have to be in hypermode so you continuously lose health and then when the credits roll the bonus ending for getting 100% shows a shitty friend chasing after Samus.

PS the beginning isn't that bad if you can ignore the fact the dialog and the fact that samus is some shitty anime character as opposed to a normal person like in 1 because it has the only redeeming part of the whole game (the first fight with Ridley).

I'm worried about them over-storying Other M.

the trailer was all "epic movie."  and story is not team ninja's forte.

Yes, and I believe anyone who says otherwise is distinguished mentally-challenged.

Looking back on the thread I see some solid evidence for my hypothesis.

You better not be counting the DS games in that comparison. Or even Metroid 2.

Yeah I'm worried about that game too. I always felt Retro actually succeeded with Metroid's theme and tone with the Prime series but it seems Nintendo is throwing it out in favor of.. well, whatever the hell Other M is suppose to be doing. I almost worried this will be a repeat of where Nintendo threw out Retro's great Samus model for Prime 1 in favor of "Samus the anime barbie".  :-\

I just don't think Nintendo of Japan really understands the series anymore.

To be fair I disown hunters and the only metroid I haven't played is return of Samus.

I'm still baffled by Prime 1 hate during my replay.  They NAILED that Metroid feel and enhanced it with the first person view.  The scan visor does a great job of providing a story if you want it.  I think ToxicAdam would complain you don't end up with a hyperkinetic samus as you progress, but the boostball and doublejump along with a stronger amassing arsenal  really make you feel empowered as you breeze through previously preciptous areas.  The one big gripe I have is that the backtracking only works in the confined areas.  Chozo ruins is ace level design.  Having to leave Phendrana to grab the space jump boots back on the overworld is really dumb nonsensical level progression.

Sanctuary Fortress is better that just about any other level in any of the Prime games.
