Guitar Hero 5 impressions
« on: August 29, 2009, 11:37:48 AM »
I went back to Rock Band after 20 minutes.  It's a step up from Metallica!

(The vocal system still blows, but it has some nice features that I'd like in RB3.)

What features would you like to see in RB3?

How does vocal stuff suck? I've never played GHWT.

I like the party play mode.  If you have the game just sitting idly at the title screen, it will be playing a random song, and a person can jump in at any time and play whatever instrument or difficulty they wish.  I also like the challenge mode that gives you tasks like 'get a score over XXX' or 'hit so many notes in a row'.  It helps add replayability to songs you wouldn't play more than once.

The vocal system sucks because you have to be pitch perfect to get credit for any section of a vocal phrase, and the feedback is mediocre at best.  There is a glowing dot and you have to match it exactly to the lines.  The arrow in RB is better because you can see the tail end and adjust on the fly if you are slightly off, whereas it is a guessing game in GH5. In GH5, a bar fills up, and when it hits green, your multiplier increases wehereas there was no visual feedback whatsoever in GHWT.

I actually rescind my complaints about the vocal system.  The PS3 and 360 versions have a trail that makes vocal adjustments possible, whereas the Wii version is gimped in this regard.  Vocals on the PS3 and 360 look exactly like Rock Band.

Lips had that party mode thing, which is a great idea.

Yeah, I was just going to mention Lips having that; though it's gimped to only play 30 seconds of any track /unless/ someone steps up to sing. I guess in an actual party that would be OK -- no-one likes the song enough to sing it. But if I am relaxing around the house it would have been nice to have the game play 30 music videos for me.

Remember. You're talking about a guy who's only requirement for Weird Al's parody was that it not be about food.

Got the game and played through the career mode and a couple multiplayer matches; game features are great, actual setlist not so much. So uninteresting.

GH5 is trash.  Save your money for the 10 good songs in GH5 to show up as Rock Band DLC.

Guitar Hero 1 already bored me to death.
Never bought another Guitar Hero since then.

I never understood its appeal. The games are basically each year the same. Only the tracks change.

It basically gives instant gratification for living out your rockstar fantasy.  Also, the games make good score attacks if you are into that sort of thing.

Courtney Love's twitter is pure insanity.  I challenge you to read more than a page of this: http://twitter.com/courtneylover79

Actually, the second page is pretty good too.  Recommended reading.

I really want to play a Sunny Day Real Estate song in a plastic guitar game, but I don't want to support Guitar Hero.

I don't understand why people hate on Guitar Hero. Who gives a shit if it wasn't developed by Harmonix?

People always bitch about the monopoly in football games, but they openly want Harmonix to have a monopoly in the music genre.

Harmonix are just as lazy as Neversoft, and also as scummy.

So scummy, they forget that The Beatles appeared in one of their earlier games, Karaoke Revolution Volume 3.

Guitar Hero tries to be so incredibly hardcore that it just comes off as juvenile. I hate the graphical interface and style of the game, and I can't stand the tiny guitars in comparison to the RB guitars. I do own GHIII and WT, so it's not like I'm just spouting off random thoughts without actually playing it.

I should probably note that I never played a guitar game until the first Rock Band.

You might be the only person in existance who perfers the shitty RB guitars over the amazing GH ones *

spoiler (click to show/hide)
the Gretsch is so awesome, but Harmonix' bullshit about the buttons having to be held down to work is distinguished mentally-challenged, just because they don't want to be kind to their customers who spent $100 on the controller and repair them
[close]

And I don't see how RB doesn't come off as juvenile either. It's just so drab and boring, it's like it's trying to be too snobby and egotistic to me that it turns me off.

I just don't understand why people just can't enjoy both games. It's like most peoples opinons have to be "It HAS to be in RB for it to be any good" and that's just distinguished mentally-challenged. GH kiddies aren't nearly as bad as RB kiddies. All they care about is their e-peen, rather then false alliances and grudges.

The GHIII guitar is so tiny compared to the RB guitar, I felt like I was playing with a Fisher Price guitar or something. It just didn't click with me.

Eh, I like it a lot better.

I'll probably pick up GH5 for cheap after Christmas to get my SDRE fix.

I already said that I only have a GHIII controller. I never bought a GHWT guitar because I can use my Rock Band guitars with it.
