John Rambo's officially readying for a fifth mission.

Nu Image/Millennium Films has greenlit the franchise's fifth installment, with Sylvester Stallone starring and directing, repeating his duties from 2008's "Rambo."

The upcoming project's storyline revolves around Rambo fighting his way through human traffickers and drug lords to rescue a young girl abducted near the U.S.-Mexico border. Production will start in the spring.

The film will be produced by Avi Lerner, Kevin King Templeton and John Thompson. Danny Dimbort, Trevor Short and Boaz Davidson will exec produce.

Stallone had indicated in interviews that a fifth Rambo was in the works. He teamed with Nu Image/Millennium on the 2008 project, which grossed $42 million domestically and $113 million overseas.

Nu Image/Millennium is in post-production on "Expendables," starring Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li and Mickey Rourke. The actioner's set for release on April 23 through Lionsgate.

Rambo first appeared in the 1982 pic "First Blood," followed in 1985 by "First Blood II" and in 1988 by "Rambo III."

Meh, not saying it sucked but I don't get the hype. Uber violence and action scenes that seemed to be sped up or some shit, which made them look/feel even worse.

First Blood is a genuinely good film, anything afterward is difficult to take seriously, but that doesn't mean that the sequels are bad by any means.  If I'm being honest with myself, Rambo 4 was more entertaining then any of the previous films.

In any event, what's not to love about an action film coming out that's not some watered down, teenage appealing, PG-13 dreck.  And gol-dern it, the Mexican drug cartels have any and all negative portrayals due to them.  I'm pumped for another Stallonesome night in a theater.

Mexican drug cartels are out. Rambo returns to the Pacific Northwest in RAMBO V: THE SAVAGE HUNT. He's sent in to hunt down a feral genetically modified soldier who is Rambos equal.

In Slys own words:
http://www.aintitcool.com/images2009/Rambo5SlyVoiceMail.mov

Quote
You see, it is set in the Pacific Northwest. Back in the general area where we first were introduced to John. It seems that somewhere in that Area there is a U.S. Military installation that is doing experiments on elite soldiers as part of some sort of program where they're attempting to tap into that SAVAGERY that we have deeply embedded into us. The plan is create brilliantly instinctual killer soldiers that have no qualms about taking life. Sly brought up the ancient Immortals, which were cartoonishly glimpsed in 300. In reality, they were children trained from the time they were infants to kill.

Well as happens with Government Experiments to create the perfect killer - it goes exceptionally well... and then exceptionally badly. And Rambo is brought in with a Black Ops squad ("Like in PREDATOR") to hunt, capture or kill this worse than Rambo killer.

As you should know, it is early on the project. They've whipped up a quicky one-sheet that will be somewhere around the Toronto Film Festival beginning tomorrow. You can see it here!

It got cut because Sly realized it was stupid.

True, but that was Predator, which also got by on it's cool effects and monster design. If these genetic soldiers just look like humans (or if that one-sheet is to be believed, gun-toting bears), it just won't be the same without the wholesale gory deaths.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm jazzed. Especially after Sly's supposed original hope for part five to be a courtroom-ish drama, if I recall correctly.

I just want them to make sure there's lots and lots of ridiculous deaths.

Rambo 1 was good but it's a bit disappointing when you realize how much more sense the original ending would have made (he kills himself).

Their editorial stuff is pretty awful, but their staff is well connected. They're not known for fabricating stories. Plus, I think Harry talked to Sly himself. They even have a scan of the plot synopsis online.

They are a reputable outlet for information, but terrible for editorial.

The one thing that's the most depressing out of all this?

I was developing a feature idea that has a lot of similarities to this plot synopsis. It was one of my "back burner" projects, in case anything I'm working on goes anywhere.

Now that's ruined.

Thanks, SLY.
