Another firmware upgrade already?  Does this new firmware bring any new functions? 

I don't really give a crap either way about cosmetic changes.  Unlike most PS3 owners, I have enough games to play that I don't have to keep toying with the PS3's interface. 

It makes me sick that I have to go through 1-2 hrs of a fimrware upgrade just so that I can again access the PS store for demos.

just messing around a bit more in this, the what's new thing is fine.  I was annoyed that it didn't boot with the current inserted disk, but at least now, even downloadable games you're going through can be selected while the TV is turning on.   and fast forwarding through videos using the right analog like an ipod wheel is nice.

That little window in the top right looks like a good addition. Why it wasn't there day one is beyond me.

I have a custom background so I guess I'll never see the doofy stars.

Those little thumbnail shortcut areas look kind of lazy, not digging it.

So far unlike everyone else I like the slightly larger fonts and the grey backgrounds behind the friend names, I dislike the twinklie stars but it's not a big deal since my PS-Trey stays at my girls place and she likes em, & I also prefer the new ticker tape. At least now the ticker tape seems to have a reason for being there, reminds me of the scroll on XBMC feed.

Good stuff overall, but how do I access the BBC video thing so it shows up all the time in the menu ? & what about disabling the twinklie stars when my girl isn't looking ? :snicker

Plus I love the fact that they finally incorporated the PSN movie offering with the video section, this should help with their online movie sales too.
(the next thing they need to work on is video watching while it's downloading in the background. It sucks having to download the entire movie before being able to start viewing it)

Overall I think it's a great update, probably the best so far IMO.

I don't know if it's just in my head, but the PS3 seems to be a bit faster now in the start up and booting games (the "Playstation 3" logo doesn't pop up when you start games now, or maybe it's just for Batman, idk)

The font is hardly an issue.  It doesn't lose any information that was being displayed before and it makes better use of the empty space on the XMB.  It's still smaller and sharper than the blurry, low resolution 360 font used throughout the dashboard.

The focus effect, however, is absolutely awesome.  I can't understand why anyone would dislike it.  It's just a depth of field effect and it highlights whatever menu is engaged.  Hopefully they don't remove it due to complaints as I think it is a massive improvement.

I think the firmware update was great across the board.  The friends list thing is the only real area that needs work.  It has potential, but they need to include more information in those boxes and add transparency.

The font thing isn't a problem (minor or major).  I think it is an improvement simply because it makes better use of the open area of the screen.  I love small fonts, normally, but only when they actually improve usability (by displaying more on screen data).

The old fonts were perfectly readable, the new ones really do look a bit on the big side. But regardless - please provide an option for small, Sony.

I do think their larger size allows them to appear very clean, however.  The font is large and anti-aliased which results in a very smooth yet sharp appearance.  It's like increasing the font size on your PC.  The text becomes much smoother looking when it has more pixels to work with.

Hopefully, they allow for users to adjust to several different sizes in the future.
