What am I missing with the DS?
« on: September 01, 2009, 07:27:00 PM »
Besides lego goat ass...

Everyone on gaf raves that the DS is godly, but I'm either missing the good games or I've played them all.

I've done Bangai-O, Devil Survivor, the Castlevania games, Ninja Gaiden, Planet Puzzle League, Mario Kart, NSMB, mario 64, Electroplankton, Chrono Trigger, all 4 ace attorney games, trauma center, ketsui, Osu 1 and 2, GTA, etc.

Didn't like any of the S-E titles...FF3, 4, DQ games, etc.

I'm not into archaic RPGs or rogue-likes.

Have I pretty much exhausted my options?

also, I'm thinking of selling my near perfect onyx DS...before I move on, I want to know if I've missed anything.

But if you're not interested, sell your DS. Seems you;ve played all the good games already.

Everyone on gaf praises ds as godly, and while it's a really good system, people claiming it's on par with ps2 or prevous consoles likes psx, snes, saturn, genesis, whatever really grinds my gears for some reason. There is endless hyperbole when it comes to both ds and psp at gaf, but ds more so. That said, they're still better than all three current gen consoles, that's a fact.

I did play TWEWY - it was awesome.  Forgot about that one!

They give you $30 in credit there...I'd rather sell it for like $70 online, giving someone a good deal and coming out ahead.

Um no

but you're right there's a ridiculous amount of story based Japan games on the ds. This is why I prefer the psp: pick up and play action games are its exertise.

DS is a good system outside it being a portable.

Will still play a good, but not great, console HD game over a great portable game anytime I have gaming time.  I only play portable systems in the bathroom anymore or on flights/trains.

:piss portable gaming :piss2
:bow console gaming that isn't the Wii :bow2

My favorites are TWEWY, Shiren the Wanderer and Knights in the Nightmare.  I guess you've played the first, and the second falls under a genre you dislike ( :( ) so, uh, try Knights in the Nightmare?  Other than that, Lunar Knights is pretty good, then in a couple weeks there's the remake of SaGa 2  :hyper

I played Shiren for a bit and thought it was pretty decent, though I'm not compelled to play it anymore.  I think I mixed up rogue-likes and wizardry-likes (is that a genre?)...first person rpgs

Just call em first person rpgs.

But not all first person rpgs are Wizardry clones.

Yeah, I didn't see the big deal about Etrian Odyssey either.  Shiren is awesome because of all the wacky random shit that can happen, plus great music.

They haven't announced a NA release date for SaGa 2 (if there will even be one).

DS is great.  The only thing I hate is that none of the hardware iterations have been comfortable to hold, and I guess that the 3D games are ugly, and that two screens is completely distinguished mentally-challenged, but whatever.  As for all the praise, well, it has a lot of 2D/old games and is a Nintendo system; it's man-baby mecca.

man, I just don't get the appeal of those games.  From the style to the actual puzzles, it's like the games are designed to put you into a comatose state.

My DS has strictly been a Mario Kart player since January 08. I got it in October 07 to play NSMB, enjoyed it. Picked up Ultimate Mortal Kombat in December, not so much. Got Mario Kart a week later. Fin.

My DS has basically been the Phoenix Wright+Castlevania player.  Never really got into anything else, don't bother buying games anymore or even making use of the flashcart I got for it.  The system just sits on my shelf.  Drawn To Life might make me break it out again.

Sounds like you gave it a fair try, man.

Nothing is going to appeal to everyone.  I know some people that don't like chocolate.

it's not that I don't like it.  It's that I've played a lot, but see people calling it the best thing ever and am wondering if there's more.

It's a good list of games...I guess I don't get that sentimental about consoles or something.

Apple has been quietly building up momentum with the iPhone as a game platform. That'd be totally weird if it eventually takes over the industry. It'd be totally opposite to Sony's approach.

I actually really dig the low-poly/low-res style of 3D on PS1 and DS.  I think effective use of limited resources can make an appealing aesthetic on its own.  (also I :heart the Low Poly Challenge board on polycount.net, http://boards.polycount.net/forumdisplay.php?f=58)  All this bitching I see about it makes me :gloomy

There are quite a bit of ARPGs too... :P Although the amount of original RPGs looks to be improving though - DQ9, the FF 4 Warriors of Light game, Sands of Destruction, Nostalgia, the new Blue Dragon... there's probably more that I'm forgetting.

BTW, totally agree with you earlier in the thread, I wish way more DS games would use sprites instead of low-grade polygons. The big problem isn't the texture detail, or the lack of polygons on the models, it's the lack of filtering that turns everything into a shimmering mess.

I disagree with the DS being considered a "godly" system. When I think of a "godly" system, I think of something like the PS2, which has an abundance of excellent games in every single genre - RPG, fighting, smhups, adventure games, action, you name it, it's got something worthwhile. Everyone put their crap on the PS2 (which is something I hate about this generation: support has become so incredibly spread out that you can no longer find an abundance of everything on one system).

DS is a "godly" system if you consider the amount of original RPG's/SRPG's on it. It's got an impressive collection. Other than that genre, it doesn't have much. Very few solid action games, absolutely no worthwhile fighting games, very little Western support. It does have a nice AVG collection though.

I think the reason the DS has such a minimal collection of games for the other genres is because Nintendo royally fucked up with the specs. It's like while it was in development they asked themselves "Now, how can we make this system have the ugliest possible 3D known to mankind? It can only handle N64/PSX level visuals, so let's get rid of any texture filtering that might allow in-game models to resemble something. Also, don't let the system be able to render very many colors. Oh, and to top it off, let's make the resolution REALLY shitty as well, so developers will be forced to put vital information on the other screen".

In comparison, the PSP is so much more attractive to developers for games that require any sort of action, which I think explains its abundance of fighting games, shmups, etc compared to the DS. I suppose the only popular genre that's really suitable for the DS is TBRPG's, and as a result, that's its strongest point. I honestly love the two screens/touch screen (they're so much better than waggle... ugh) and I feel they've still got a lot of untapped potential that could offer a lot to other genres (which is why it pains me to see it mostly put to waste and shoe-horned into games). The two screens in particular offer a lot of opportunity, and it sucks to see so many developers mostly (and pointlessly) take advantage the touch screen only.

I went off too long on that. I can see why you'd consider FF3/4 and the DQ games archaic (in particular the DQ games, as the series is founded on its archaic nature), but if Chrono Trigger doesn't tickle your fancy, I don't know how you can like TBRPG's at all. To shorten all this, the DS is a "godly" system if you only consider its collection of original TBRPG's. Outside of that it doesn't have much. I love TBJRPG's so the DS is a great system for me.

when did I say I didn't like those games?  I've played and liked all of them. I thought maybe I was missing another vein of awesome games.  and fuck, I'm not reading all that. :lol

Doesn't look like it from the vids I've seen so far. It looks like the same style as Etrian Odyssey. Even if I'm wrong about that, DS is still lacking good new rpgs. At least in the US it is.

IIRC Bebpo liked it.  I think that's a separate multiplayer mode and the single player is more or less in the same style as previous Kingdom Heartses.

has anyone played the Kingdom Hearts DS game? is it any good?

from videos, it looks like a Monster Hunter style co-op game and not like previous Kingdom Heart games.  I'm also wondering if the collision detection is jank like almost every 3D DS game.

It's got disney and little boys.
