vehicles in FPS... why?
« on: September 01, 2009, 07:43:36 PM »
Has any FPS got it right? I remember the vehicles in Halo being absolutely awful to control, now I'm playing Half Life 2 and it's the same shit.

So far the only game worth something in the orange box is Portal. Haven't tried TF2. Or the others Half Life games, but if 2 is anything to go by... I don't know if I'll even bother with those.

This reminds me, RAGE will have vehicles.... shit :(

I liked the Warthog  and I found the Half-life 2 vehicles to be intuitive and easy to control as well.

Half Life 2 is overrated as fuck.

Portal is amazing.

Haven't played Half Life 2 ep 1 or 2 because Mupepe still has my Orange Box.

TF2 is fun as hell.

The vehicles in HL2 control fine. The problem is that they're just FLAT OUT BORING. No one wants to drive around a desert in a dune buggy while we can be shooting fuckers. The vehicle sections are too long and only bog the game's quality down.

Portal sucks too. All of Orange Box sucks. HL > HL2

This post has nothing to do with vehicles(tm)

Seriously I just want to shoot at things with a shotgun (best gun in FPS), If I want to control cars or whatever the fuck I'd play a racing game.

the airboat in hl2 is easy to use, its pretty much impossible to flip it

... unlike the buggy or whatever when you hit turbo you are locked in place pretty much and it flips constantly

I replayed hl2 just recently and it hold up very well imo, ep1 has no vehicle stuff i think, ep2 has a bit at the end

the battlefield series has vehicles that control well

HL1 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> HL2

HL2 is overrated hype. Good game, NOT the best fps ever. Overuse of the gravity gun, boring vehicle levels ruin the game.

The entire game you're basically running away. Who the hell wants to do that? I want to bust some suckaz.

Best parts of the game are the beginning and end.

The set pieces that don't involve vehicles or anything are fuck awesome. And yeah, I agree the vehicles levels are way too fucking long.

I'm sure HL1 holds up perfectly today.

I'll admit HL2 has pacing issues (there's usually pay off around the corner though), but if Ep.1 and Ep.2 don't leave a good taste in your mouth, then I don't know what to say.

HL2 needs a directors cut bad.

It has a lot of great moments and it's still a great game, but Jesus the people who claim this game to be gospel while I running around a desert in a shitty buggy.

They're direct sequels that are like only a few hours long each.

I only played a bit of an HL2 demo, I'm not sure if I even got to the shooting part.  FPS as a game genre doesn't interest me, but I love the atmosphere and art direction.

I should just say fuck it to mupepe. lol He can keep my games. I let him borrow Mass Effect and Orange Box for 360 and Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles for psp. I've wanted to play all three desperately for like a year and a half. :lol

I might as well get ME and OB for pc now that I have the means but I have an ultimate save file on ME 360 where I did every sidequests in the game ever and I'll be damned if I do there ever again because the sidequests in that game are balls.

Really wanna give Ep 1 and 2 a try, but I'm worried I won't know what's going on since I haven't played HL2 in like 3 years (played it on og xbox).

There actually isn't a lot of exposition in HL2, so you could easily read the important parts quickly.

Don't mind vehicles in FPSs much.  Vehicle combat (like Vigilante 8 ) is something I will never really understand though.

"fuck, that dude's behind me"
*does u-turn*
"fuck, he's behind me again"
*does u-turn*

I love the warthog in Halo. It's just fun to mess around with when you're doing some split screen multiplayer.

HOWEVER

In general, I could do without vehicles in shooting games. I hate vehicle based levels, I hate vehicle whores when playing online. At most, vehicles should be used as methods to get from point A to point B (which is how it was mostly handled in Halo 1 with the exception of the tank sequence in AOTCR, not so much how it was handled in 2 and 3). Combat should be strictly an on-foot activity.

I love vehicles in Halo for some reason, pretty good at controlling them and every time I get in the ghost I am nearly undefeated when I play with my friends. HL2's vehicles took a bit of time to get used to, I think Halo handled vehicle controls better. The HL2 vehicle levels, especially the boat, tended to drag on waaaaaaaaaaaay too long.

Vehicles, when done well, add variety to the experience.  They allow you to cover a large area much faster and can completely change the pacing.  I still think Halo handles vehicles better than any other single player series.

I liked the vehicles in Mercs 2. It's not an FPS though.

I liked the vehicles in Mercs 1. The controls are identical to Mercs 2, and they don't all automatically explode after hit by five bullets. Mercs 2 tanks are made out of papier mache that has been soaked in gasoline.

Also, they were a little harder to get into: the "technical" (flatbeds with mounted automatic weapons) had gunners, and the "hijack" graphic for taking the car would not appear until the gunner was eliminated. The Mercs 2 games allow you to jack a car anytime, at which point the gunner will leave his .50 cal auto deathstick, climb down, and go at you with a pistol. Apparently Rambo 4 didn't play in Venezuela.
