EA: No plans for new NASCAR titles

EA Sports president Peter Moore has confirmed that there are no future plans for racing games based on the NASCAR licence.

Part of the team previously working on the series has moved onto EA's first mixed martial arts game, said Moore, which has become a new focus for the sports label.

"There are no plans right now for NASCAR from EA," said Moore, speaking to GameSpot. "We had a great relationship over the years that I thoroughly enjoyed when I first got here. Unfortunately…we had to make some tough trade-offs.

"We've had to redeploy some of those folks. A number of the NASCAR team has moved over now to EA Sports MMA, which will be shipping next year. [We're] still a huge fan of NASCAR, but no plans right now to develop any further games for NASCAR from EA Sports."

The last NASCAR title from EA Sports was NASCAR Kart Racing for the Wii, released earlier this year.

Good grief, I heard a couple of these were actually pretty good at emulating the sport, but... is there actually any sport to this? I can't fathom how hogshit wild so many Americans have gone for this style of racing, while largely ignoring Formula D and D1GP.

As I said in the Forza, oval racing does require skill and can actually be very fun, but to just watch Nascar racing is basically to watch a billboard go in a circle.  It's amazing that it's the biggest spectator sport in America.

Which is why I think EA is making a financial mistake by dropping this.  Nascar fans are as you say "hogshit wild" for anything and everything about this sport.  They are apparently also the most brand loyal sports fans (surprise!) and so it's very important to get popular drivers to endorse your shit.  If you get Ricky Dale Teddyheart junior or whatever to say that this is his favorite racing game, that's an easy billion dollars.

It just sounds like they don't have the resources atm.  I was at some kid's house who had a nascar game and I couldn't believe anyone had the patience to play a full 500 lap game.

Maybe EA shouldn't make shitty NASCAR games?  The old Papyrus PC games were the best.

Yeah, endorsements seem big. I saw NASCAR sausages at the super when I was in the States last time.  ::) Apparently there are high-heels and romance novels branded with it as well.

NASCAR is the consumer's sport, and Wii is the common consumer's console. EA should make a Wii NASCAR game, where all you do is hold the Mario Kart wheel at a 15-degree angle and press A the whole time. Hell, do it as a looped video, and most consumers would never notice.

 :(

It takes something called skill to drive 200+mph two inches away from another car and not end up dead.

We used to have Nascar tournaments and its pretty fun despite the constant left turning. Its all about catching up to eachother making each other spin the fuck out without jacking your own car up.

If they had short attention spans, they wouldn't be able to watch cars turn left for three hours.

You know what needs to be made? A second Tourist Trophy. Do it, Polyphony, goddamnit.

That would depend on whether or not the question was serious, which it was. In which case, "admitting to ignorance" is more accurately described as "seeking to rectify ignorance" or "wanting to learn." But if you just want to be a defensive dick about it, you're doing great!

I don't think it's a sport.

I don't get why rednecks love it either.  Only guess I have is that they can get hammered and then only care about the last few laps where other sports require you to pay more attention throughout the game.  Also to see if there might be any crashes that take place.  I dunno.

my dad watches nascar

i could never get into it, but i will admit that it's a lot more interesting to watch nowadays since they have cameras mounted everywhere and are constantly switching the viewing angles

when i was a kid they showed one or two views of the race and that was it, always looked like they were traveling 20 mph with the camera tracking, just mind-numbing stuff

The problem is EA treats it like every other sports game. You can get away with releasing a new football or basketball title every year because there's enough change to warrant it. In the last 10 years though, EA has released at least 14 NASCAR titles, more if you count arcade. So there's some over saturation there. And then you have the problem with the games simply not being as good as they used to be. NASCAR games used to be challenging and engaging. Now they are pretty dumbed down in the gameplay department and full of over the top presentation.

If they moved to a 2 year cycle and had strong post-release support for the games with DLC and all, I think it would make a huge difference to their sales. But then again maybe the NASCAR license just wasn't worth the money, kind of like 2K Sports is finding out about baseball. And maybe they see what companies like Polyphony are doing and figure why bother. They can't compete with a Gran Turismo.
