Jamma arcade gaming - lets party like its 1995
« on: September 04, 2009, 07:27:54 PM »
So I bought this kickass Killer Instinct 2 (a seriously underrated game) arcade cab a few weeks ago, along with buying a NBA JAM jamma board.

I ended up switching the joysticks, buttons with new ones, and adding new sideart. It looks AWESOME.

Who heres has experience with all this madness? I work with IT, and play with serious enterprise hardware all day long, and yet for some reasons, i'm terrorized at the concept of trying the nba jam board in it. I'm finding all sorts of conflicting info about power supplies and whats not, i dont want to end up frying the board/power supply over some dumb shit

I know its suposed to be just easily swappable, but eh... I'm also in the talk of buying a 4 slots neogeo cab with Samurai Shodown, Wind Jammers, Last Resort and Baseball Stars 2.  Same guy is also selling a cheap 400$ soul edge 2 cab, so i might end up picking up both.

The Soul Edge 2 cab will be my 'practise, testing and fucking around' cab

I know that most people think its a waste of time because of emulation and etc, but eh, KI2 is pretty awesome on the real hardware, compared to the mame emulation.. the sound has that really weird metallic sound under mame.

Anyway, who is here is rocking it oldschool?

Emulation is cool, but if I had the time and money, I'd love to put together arcade cabinets.

Astro City cabs are so sweet. Put a couple stools in front of those and you're set.

If/when I'm a home owner, I definitely want to get some arcade cabinets.  The Astro City / Japanese style ones seem more convenient, but I'd probably get the ones I was used to for nostalgia reasons.  Or just get both, turn the Astro City one into a Mame one.

OH SHIT DID SOMEONE SAY JAMMA

When I relocated from Japan to the USA, one of the conditions was that they would sea-mail back my Astro cab.  :elephant There was this redneck guy who delivered it and was like in constant shock of me shipping back an arcade machine, offering the line "BEFORE WE OPENED THE CRATE WE THOUGHT YOU DONE SHIPPED BACK A RO-BAWT".

Right now my collection is:
Virtua Fighter 2
Dead or Alive
Zero Gunner (flaky)

Shitload of ST-V games (including Silvergun of course)

Star Trigon
Hyper Olympic
Tanto-R

I just bought a JPAC so I could make it into ze ultra MAMEbox but haven't had the chance to get it running. I think I am going to have to build a tiny, tiny PC because I can't seem to figure out how to get laptop VGA cables to output the proper 15khz :(

the problem with 3D arcade games is that the games are either so primitive they are awful to look at, and the newest stuff is super expensive. And also, you need med res or high res monitors. And High Res monitors dont work well with older games :(

How are those astrocities?

A store in Hong Kong was willing to sell me an astrocity minus the TV for $200.  I was interested but I didn't get it since it was too much of a hassle to ship it back to the US.

Yeah, unless you know what you are doing NEVER EVER EVER EVER ROOT AROUND IN THE BACK OF THE MONITOR, NO MATTER HOW LONG IT'S BEEN OFF. TV tubes can carry enough electricity to kill you many times over. (Switching an Astro cab from low to medium resolution requires you to put your fingers near the tube and it scares the bejeezus out of me)

I want to make a small MAME pc to put in my astro cab but there's not enough room inside...dammit

the dudes left about 30 minutes ago, the guy selling them was a total super hardcore arcade guy, turns out he's been doing this as a job in an arcade shop since he's been 12, the neogeo monitor is *PERFECT*, the soul edge cab is good, the monitor is a bit used BUT no burnins or anything terrible. And holy god at how fuckign BAD soul edge is. It aged horribly. It's so slow and awkward, wow.

But anyway i'm switching it nba jam soon. the Neogeo cab looks funky as hell next to the killer instinct one, I think i'll just put it in another room while the two midway cabs will chill together.

Wind Jammer is awesome, baseball stars 2, samurai shodown is ok (but i'm gonna try to find ss5 on ebay) and last resort is oldschool fun.

i'll take some tomorrow. I just cant believe how fucking BRIGHT the monitor is. The dude told me he took it from a neogeo monitor they had forever in the shop, and that it barely had any playtime since they got it back in the days.

I kinda wanna get one of those 111-in-1 neogeo carts, but i hear they bug out with 4 slots boards.

Also, the MK1 cab is pretty fucking cool, i can slide the board from the front, this way i can have two boards on the same side of the machine, on a little sliding rack. This way i just open the little door from the front of the cab, slide out the rack, switch the jamma connector, then slide the board back in. This is way more convenient than having to open the back of the machine, etc etc etc.

It's a real MK1 cab from back in the days, the back panel has the original Midway tag with Mortal Kombat written on it, with a cab serial number. I have no idea if that little sliding rack is a custom job from the guy, he was so kick-ass haha.. I looked at the innards of the mk1 cab, and it looks alright, the power supply wasnt bolted (which is kind of shitty but eh i'll fix it).

The sideart is awesome, with Johnny Cage and etc. Since I have a UMK3 board coming in from the internet, I think i'll just find the original art of the MK1 Control Panel, photoshop it to add UMK3's run button), and fix the art so that it looks clean, and get it printed out by mamemarquees.com. The joysticks seem kinda iffy, Or maybe its just because of how slow Soul Edge is. I'll swap them out with red joysticks along with red buttons.

I'm gonna take pics of each step, this way you guys will be able to look at the progress.

I still cant believe I own a neogeo. hahaha

Hello boys and girls.

This arcade stuff has taken over my gaming life, I havent turned on my 360 except to watch movies in like months now :(. I swear to god, Arcade collecting is like pure crack, and its fucking awesome fun and amazing to rebuild a cab, fix all the problems, you get a really cool sense of pride when its all done..

After that virtua racing purchase disaster (it turned out the game was all wrecked, the steering whell was broken, htf does that happens?), I returned to that other arcade op I've made a connection with. I ended up purchasing Street Fighter CE (real legit board, no hacked rainbow board lameness) and.. Virtual Tennis! They are both in Midway style cabs, which is great because thats how my other cabs are so they all fit together.

I should get them this weekend. The cab sides are generic, they look like mk cabs that were repained over. I'm going to sort them out real quick so that they look classy and they'll go with the other games.

My current lineup is Mortal Kombat 1 (with this awesome turbo hack that allows mk2 style juggles and speed), Killer Instinct 2 (totally underrated title, people seem to remember the n64 port, but the real game is actually way different), a Neogeo MVS with Samurai Shodown 1, Puzzle Bubble, Viewpoint and Baseball Stars 2, and Super Chase HQ.

so yeah.

And i'll be honest, I'm not too much into the japanese style cabs, those newer models are great, but eh, I dont know, the sit down cabs are kinda meh and would look super tacky in my gameroom

I've always wanted to get into cabinets too, and the only reason I haven't is because of space limitations.  If I had the space, I'd get the 4 player X-Men game in a heartbeat.  Spare no expense.

Why is it that there is rarely (if at all) any rail shooter cab cock flexing?  Are they horrific to maintain or is it simply more efficient to emulate them with some form of guncon peripheral or another?

they are hard to get on the aftermarket because they still make a lot of money. So arcadeops and distributors dont want to sell them. House of the Dead 2 is still a massively big earner, for exemple.

Also, replacement lightguns and pieces are really incredibly expensive, we are talking between 100-300 for a replacement gun or shotgun. It's kinda of hilarious.

They are annoying to maintain.

Wow, XFE's collection is like a library.  But it seems like that game room is almost at full capacity already.

Maybe the royal X-couple can sleep on the sofas?  Also, the XFE needs a better joystick.  Playing with that stick is akin to holding a hobo stick as a royal scepter.
