Gaming: The rest of 2009
« on: September 08, 2009, 01:12:07 AM »
Summer almost over and the fall gaming releases are starting to ramp up.  What games are you excited for the rest of the year? Here are my most probable purchases.

Multi:

Tekken 6
: I've always had fun with the Tekken series, even though it peaked for me at Tekken 3, but the promise of online play makes this a must buy.  Hopefully, Namco has improved their netcode.  Tekken 5:DR and SCIV had spotty netcode, which hampered their online play.  Japanese studios have gotten much better of late with online netcode, and hopefully Tekken 6 will continue to raise the bar, but I'm skeptical.

PlayStation 3:

Uncharted 2: I loved the prequel.  It was a solid B plus effort and the sequel looks much more polished.  Hopefully Naughty Dog introduces more variety and some of the prequels set pieces got repetitive after while.

Wii:

New Super Mario Brothers Wii: I'm a sucker for Mario games and I enjoyed the DS incarnation, though the game has many haters.  While not at the level of SMB3/SMW, the game was a fun platformer that evoked the simple, tight level design of SMB1/3.

Not many purchases, but I mostly rent anyway.  But the following games also pique my interest:
Brutal Legend
RockBand: Beatles
Demon's Soul
L4D2
Scribblenauts
Soul Calibur PSP

Beatles (PS3)
ODST (maybe)
Scribblenauts
Y's Seven (maaaaaaybe; probably not)
SMT Strange Journey
Uncharted 2
Brutal Legend (PS3)
Tekken 6 (PS3)
Ratchet Again
GTA Eps Pack
Alpha Protocol (PC)
CoD4-2 (X360)
AC2 (X360)

Will feel good ignoring handheld gaming & the Wii for the most part and just playing good time 2009 games.  If most of those turn out good, it should be a nice holiday season.

While it is annoying that a lot of the big games (most importantly Splinter Cell Conviction  :heartbeat) are now 2010, it's nice to have good gaps between these games.  Only annoying time is late October when Alpha Protocol, new Ratchet and Gay Tony all come out on the same day (and Forza 3, too).  I just got interested in the new Ratchet game yesterday when I saw that new video that makes it seem like the structure is a mix between Mario Galaxy, Wind Waker (boat areas) and old Ratchet games. Plus, there is some kind of shading they have on everything now that makes it look really good.  I don't get how they can make the Ratchet PS3 games look so good, then make a butt ugly game like Resistance 2 that uses google maps as ground textures.

If Perfect Dark XBLA is this year, I'm getting that too.

It's all about MODERN WARFARE 2.

I will probably ask for Brutal Legend and Borderlands for Hannukah. Other than maybe ODST, I'm not interested in anything else.

Also might buy Way of the Samurai 3, but my backlog is huge and I have to go to school and shit.

Backlog:
Persona 4 (FINISHING TONIGHT, BITCHES or tomorrow)
Tales of Vesperia

I'm debating on whether or not I should get a PS3 or a new computer. If I get a PS3, it's Brutal Legend, Lost Planet 2 and Uncharted 2. If it's a PC... well, I'll be played a shit-load of old games like Full Throttle, Tron 2.0, Grim Fandango (if I can get it to work), Far Cry 2, a ton of old shit because PC games are kind of slow-going now for me. At least until Diablo 3 comes about, but the more I see of that game the less I seem to care. Probably  because it's been in development for millennia.

Buying Modern Warfare 2, and that's it. It's a shame that Conviction got pushed into 2010. I'll get Ratchet, if I get the PS3 fixed.

Definites:

Multi:

-Tekken 6: I'm gonna end up TRIPLE dipping on this and buying all three versions, I just know it.   :-[

360:

-Bayonetta: Not taking a chance on the PS3 version.  360 it is!
-Halo 3 ODST
-Modern Warfare 2: I'm pretty much just getting this because all my friends are.  I prefer Halo to CoD.

PS3:

-Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
-Uncharted 2

Wii:

-New Super Mario Bros. Wii: Seems like it could be fun.
-Metroid Prime Trilogy: I played the original for like five minutes.  Would like to give this series another try with the new control scheme.

Maybes:

PSP:

-Motorstorm Arctic Edge

DS:

-Scribblenauts

360:

-Borderlands
-Left 4 Dead 2
-Mushihimesama Futari
-GTA Episodes Pack

I'm not sure if I want to buy a ds for the .... I think eighth time, just to play scribblenaughts.   It seems like the kind of a game that could work on any hardware and will probably pop up somewhere else down the road.

The definites:

Nsmb Wii:  I enjoyed the ds version although I traded it back in for various reasons. I'm seeing alot of cool level design in the show floor demos.

Silent Hill Shattered Memories:  I've been shying away from extensive single player games but theres alot of elements here aligning to my tastes.  I'm a novelty whore who looks forward to the psychological profiling and the IR flashlight.

Warioware DIY:  No solid release date besides TBA 09 but the ds retail release will coincide with the wiiware version.  The editing tools and connectivity will probably force me to get a dsi.

Shaun White 10- First one was surprisingly well made and the balance board controls were fun.  Kinda ignored it for awhile and traded it in when I heard a sequel was coming.

Maybe if I'm super bored:
A Boy and His blob- I hear good things about wayforward
Rabbids go home- ubisoft katamari damacy
TMNT smash up:  Still butthurt over no turtles in time for me.
Cave Story: I have to wonder if this is ever coming out.
Night Game:  " "
Wii Fit+:  The routine building seems like a big step up.  Don't care about the new minigames at all though.
Sakura Wars-  Reads like a fruity srpg ,but I could use an srpg fix.

Not interested unless theres a huge amount of praise:

I make a point of buying the niche games first at full price and the big production games much later on when they're cheaper, I know who needs my money more.  So my definites for this year include...

Way of the Samurai 3
Arcade Shooter: Illvelo
Scribblenauts
A Boy and His Blob
at least one XSeed game
and a whole buncha downloadable games.

oh, and Miles Edgeworth for the gf.

The only game I want is New Super Mario Bros Wii, so far. Maybe Mario and Luigi 3, but I haven't played any of the other M&L games. And maybe Uncharted 2 just for something pretty to look at. And maybe I will get the new COD game for free again, I don't think I'd actually run out and buy it though. The girl at Gamestop keeps telling me I should check out Scribblenauts but I still don't really get the hype. Will get Fallout 3 GOTY eventually when it drops in price, just to have all the DLC on a disk.
