yeah, fuck em, i'll see what the zuneHD has to offer in the way of apps and games - if nothing comes out of that, i'll just get over my fascination with PMP devices

Some 3D racing game is shown.  So hey, games exist.

from what i've read the baseline price of games and apps on zune hd marketplace is $2.99

so, hopefully that means 1000% less fart apps to wade through

There's no Zune HD app store yet.  They are waiting on Windows Mobile so as to avoid stepping on each other's toes apparently.

Apps for now are all MSFT-developed or commissioned, and free (but apparently display ads on startup -- WTF?!)

What do you mean wait for windows mobile? What OS does the Zune HD use? I haven't read much up on it other then the ifixit tear down. I'm more inclined to go for a zune HD now then a touch. My wife has a touch and it's great. It seems to be the default to wrote apps for, so that is a major benefit. BUt other then that, I like the HD radio on the Zune.

Windows Mobile is working on an app store and they want to make sure whatever they do with the Zune interoperates with that, so they're waiting for that.  Zune HD uses a custom Windows CE-based OS.
