NES Circle-Jerk (Or Hate Parade) Thread
« on: September 10, 2009, 03:59:57 PM »
Hey EB, I've recently been playing the shit out of some NES games and I want to build up a decent backlog now that I'm exploring the murky depths of classic video games. I've already got some Mega Man going on with 1 and 2 (my series favorites) and I'm ankle-deep in some Startropics action. Here are the games I will already be playing:

Bionic Commando
Mach Rider
Mega Man 1 and 2
Metal Storm
Metroid
Ninja Gaiden 1, 2 and 3
Rad Racer
Startropics 1 and 2

What other games are must-plays? And if it isn't already obvious, I'm excluding the common sense ones like Zelda and Mario because I've played them dozens of times already. The OP will be edited as I add games.

Beyond my own selfish needs, this thread can also double as an NES discussion thread, reminiscing, and hell, any old school gaming activity.

Dragon Warrior! The first one was pretty good, even when I replayed it a few years ago. Don't really know about the other ones though.

Also, Guardian Legend, it's part top-down shooter and part Zelda-clone. The merger didn't always work, but it had some really catchy music.

Power Blade (I think there was a sequel)
Kick Master
Shatter Hand
Shadow of the Ninja
Vice: Project Doom
Kung Fu (yep, the launch title.  it holds up.)

There are a fuck ton of weird side scroller games on the NES.  These are some of my favorites.

Crystalis
Wrecking Crew
Life Force
Ninja Gaiden 1-2
Metal Storm
Power Blade
Recca: Summer Carnival 92
Chip 'N Dale Rescue Rangers
Dragon Warrior IV (better than the DS version since it doesn't have those shitty accents lol)

Nice @ Kafka mentioning Kick Master and Shadow of the Ninja... thought I was the only one who played those games :P

megaman 3 > megaman 1 and 2 but all 6 of the nes MM's are worth playing. 4 is the worst of the bunch and entirely forgettable but MM1-3, 5, and 6 are pretty good games.

I suggest Faxanadu, Kirby, Super Dodgeball, Batman, Ghosts 'n Goblins, River City Ransom, and Castlevania 3.

Don't bother with Metroid nes. It sucks. Play the superior remake, Metroid Zero Mission for the GBA. Best Metroid ever.

I admire people that can stomach these games. I played the shit out of them when I was 12, but now it's like watching old A-team episodes.

Some still hold up (Star Tropics and it's sequel are good ones) but most are too hard or repetitive to be qualified as fun.

Even though it is more of a 2 player game (the AI is horrible) Dusty Diamond's All-star Softball was one of the great sports titles of the NES.

Little Samson, Gimmick!, Armadillo and Sunman are pretty cool platformers that don't get much mention.

My faves:

Solstice
Faxanadu
Snake Rattle & Roll
Star Wars (gets really hard eventually, I never finished it)

I liked TMNT as well, although it did get too hard for me at Level 4 or 5.

I really wanted to play Duck Tales, Power Blade and Metal Storm, but never had them.  Wrath of Black Manta was good, a little easy perhaps.
