So why exactly is Burnout Paradise good?
« on: September 10, 2009, 07:19:09 PM »
I've been thinking about getting it for that Amazon 3-for-2 deal that's going on. Except I hated the demo, alot. But the game gets so much praise and the demo is frequently cited as far shitty than the full game. So exactly what is it about the full game that makes it oh so much more awesome than the shitty demo?

I was a big fan of the Burnout series, but Paradise just left me cold.

It's amazing.  Ignore the crack smokers.

from my random bloggings .txt I keep around

Top10 of 2008

1.  Burnout Paradise
2.  Dead Space
3.  Soma Bringer
4.  Little Big Planet
5.  Persona 4
6.  Mirrors Edge
7.  DMC4
8.  MGS4
9.  SSBB
10. Layton 2 / Tales of Vesperia

Yeah, I thought it was that good last year.  I also played the heck out of the Island expansion for trophies and completition and pure fun while doing so.  The game has SUCH good achievements/trophies/challenges.  You get addicted to it and can play for dozens of hours and days in a row without every putting it down.  The racing is fun, the NO LOADING is great, there is soooo much to do.  Tons of secrets to explore and find.  Great graphics, great racing, great cars.

Honestly if you're not an OCD completionist who loves getting rewarded for completing things, it might not be for you.  I fall into that category so it's one of the best games this gen to me.  The only other game this gen I think I like as much is Crackdown.

Yep, great game. Spent a lot of hours into it.
Bought it off PSN. But I'm not getting the add-ons.

One of my biggest disappointments with it was the mediocre crash mode. Probably second would be the lack of being able to replay a race. Yeah, I understand they want you to just go on to the next one, but come on. I want that option.

Was that one of the things they added back in later? I can't remember for sure.

Yep, they added the restart mode.

But I also miss the crash mode.

Burnout 3 is still my favorite Burnout game ever. Hell, it's my favorite arcade racer ever...

Crash mode missing is a shame, but BP is not Burnout 1-4->5.  It's a whole new experience and if you go in with an open mind it's a fantastic one at that.

I'd love to see another standard Burnout at some point with a real crash mode and tracks, but I'd also love for a BP2.

I thought Test Drive Unlimited did it better.

I thought TDU was cool, but all it had was races.  BP is more about the exploring and finding hidden things and doing jumps with racing as well.

I think of Burnout as Crackdown with cars.  It's a big world full of things to FIND and finding them is where all the fun is at.  If I only looked at BP as a racing game I'd probably be disappointed cause the races aren't anything special.

It's fuck awesome best ever. It really is. I had a hard time getting into the open world stuff at first, but once you start amassing seriously fast cars, and you complete a 20x boost chain on the freeway, everything makes sense. Also, seemingly endless, ever changing road rage events are :bow2

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed BP for a while [maybe 7-8 hours] when I was just driving around and checking things out. But after the shine wore off, I just didn't have any interest in playing it anymore. TDU, though, was a game that I could just keep going back to and trying to unlock more races and challenges and getting enough money to pick up some really sweet cars.

the only thing shitty about the demo is that you get a slow car and barely any events.

full game has the entire city and events at every single intersection. if you're not a fan of racing in an open world and learning routes then Burnout Paradise isn't for you

Not necessarily. I've always hated racing games like that, but I still love Burnout Paradise.

I thought TDU was cool, but all it had was races.

It also had deliveries as well where you were penalised due to damage, and some timed runs.

Burnout was fun for a few hours till you couldn't find a new race or had to change your vehicle to do a burning lap. I'm sure it's fine now you can restart and all.

Don't go for the arcade modes like in its predecessors, go in for the open ended racing and amazing cars. I love how the upgrade path felt in this game, it keeps you striving for those better and better cars. The rubberbanding is a bitch but it goes both way. Time trails are stupidly hard (with the faster cars) but hugely rewarding when you open up that alt version of the one you were workin'.

Hmm, Amazon trade-in will buy it back for $8. So I guess I can't lose even if I end up hating it with a passion.

Still, I better like this  :maf

The only difference between the full game and the demo is that the full game has an event at every corner, while the demo only has 3. I don't see why you wouldn't like/hate both.

I happen to like it.

The demo also limited you to a small portion of the city instead of letting you roam around the entire world.

Many people who disliked the demo liked the full game.

Yeah, I didn't like the demo and I love the full game.  The demo NOT having events at every intersection + me not really understanding how the game structure worked = complaining why they did this and how it's such a downgrade from Revenge.  Then I ate my sock.

The demo didn't really grab me, and I didn't like the game when I first got it - seemed like a lot of wandering around with no purpose or goal.

It was only when I understood how to unlock and upgrade cars that I really got into it, and also started to enjoy all the various challenges.  I think it's well worth it for cheap.

It's definitely structured different than other racers to date so it takes some getting used to and figure out how "you" can have fun.
