GOTY.  Seriously.  Uncharted or Assassin's Creed or something else is really going to have to knock my socks off to beat Batman AA.

(BTW Don't watch that video if you haven't finished the game....spoiler heavy)

Geez, Santa, I don't know how you approached this game to come up with the conclusion you did.  I'm about 35% done with it now and the game is fucking incredible.  It's like Batman TAS + Metroidvania + Metal Gear Notshitty with a little bit of fun brawling on the side.  If you really think this is something we've seen a hundred times before, I think you're letting your hate for Batman blind you, hardcore.

In Kojima's defense, the stealth AI here makes MGS guard look like Einstein.  Even on hard the stealth in Batman is MGS for kids (not a bad thing as it's very fun; just simple and easy).

SantaC has awful taste if I remember correctly, so no great surprise he isn't big on the GOTY2009.

Why Batman is a popular character is a more complicated question, but it's not because of Dark Knight.  Batman's been a consistently popular character for 70 years.

Justified urban vigilante hero with a general no kill policy, fighting crime in urban settings and doing so while still remaining reasonably, semi-plausibly human in his physical abilities. That hits a broad audience.

I think it's a little less true now with the glider cape and bat-armor but, yeah, the big thing for me is that he's ostensibly just a guy who has worked himself to the peak of human condition, driven by righteous anger, and acting effectively where society fails to do so. Superman can do just about anything, so almost nothing he does is truly impressive: Supes is almost never at risk, while Batman at his core is still subject to all the human frailties.

Even in the game, if you're ever caught either in the stealth or brawler sequences, you can go down fairly quick.  You have to constantly be planning for your next move as your completing the current one while also worrying about the immediate situation.

And I think Batman's appeal can almost be summed up by saying "prep time".  He always thinks several steps before the enemy.  The most obvious example is him keeping a room full of kryptonite just in case Superman goes crazy.  He's ready to take that bastard down.

that's because kids today are blind and stupid. I liked Burton's take on batman, but I dont give a shit about the batman fanboys today. They're rabid like N-fans.
