Were you and your friends actually expecting to go out in public on 9/11 wearing arabic head-dresses (turbans) and NOT cause a scene?
No, the point was to cause a scene.

Actually, wearing a turban might have been worse since Sikhs were actually getting beaten up after 9/11.  My friends were wearing these and I guess their goal was to just make light of the event, not actually insult the people who died or anything.

A bunch of Arab dude's going into Starbucks wearing Arab clothes on 9/11 to tease a bunch of white people is the equivalent a white dude going into a black neighborhood wearing a shirt that says "nigger nigger nigger nigger nigger" from head to toe.

They're lucky they didn't get japped.

As an aside, I have no problem with Arab people wearing their cultural garb, just like I have no problem with an Mexican wearing a sombrero on Cinco de Mayo.

But according amnintendho, they didn't do it to celebrate his birthday, they did it to make "light" of the situation.

That makes no sense.

i was walking to get sausages (not a joke), grabbed a beer and saw the world trade center was on fire, saw the second plane hit.

I was actually watching Fox News, when they reported a plane had hit and had some guy on a roof talking about it - that's when I saw the second plane hit live.

When the Pentagon crash happened, D.C. went into organized chaos mode. So many unconfirmed rumors. I mean, there were reports of bombs going off in the Metro and everything.

I actually started the GAF thread about 9/11.

I was at my place in Atlanta that morning.  My gf at the time had slept over, and we got up around the same time- me to go to work, her to go home and get ready for school.  My roomie was in the living room watching tv and he said "looks like some idiot flew a plane into the WTC".  Just looking at the first tower, we thought it was something small like a cesna or something.  I got to work and my gf called me to tell me that the second plane had hit.  A very, very surreal day.  My employees whined about having to come in, scared they were gonna be attacked on their way or something.  Crazy, crazy day.

Yeah, I think everyone had this crazed overreaction - as if thousands of hijacked planes and dirty bombs would attack Americans all over the country!

It didn't help that almost all local news outlets were reporting any unsubstantiated rumor the press desk received.

I live in close proximity to D.C. and it was chilling to see aircraft flying overhead all day, including a trio of helicopters that I could only assume were on their way to or from Camp David.

It also happened to be the first day my mother and brother were home after being in police custody, because of their involvement in a fatal car accident just two days prior. It was my mother's birthday, and despite a lot of emotional trauma, she was attempting to go to work.

That idea pretty much got canned when the second tower got hit. I remember they cancelled my college classes, so I was grounded that day. And with all these reports of attacks in downtown D.C., my mother refused to let my brother take the Metro to visit his uncle in Northwest D.C.

Yeah. We usually do not celebrate her birthday on that day, not so much because of the terrorist attacks, but all the emotional trauma that the day brings up.

That Sunday prior, she was involved in a fatal car accident. We took two separate cars back from Rehoboth Beach in Delaware. As we were crossing Ocean City, some jerk riding a motorcycle had his girlfriend hitched on the back, and decided to cut off a boat trailer.

He hit the boat, the woman flew off and hit the pavement - dying instantly. My mom tried her best to swerve around, but ran over the woman. I got home and nobody was there, and since I did not have keys, I had to break into the house. By the time I got in, the answering machine had a tearful voicemail I could barely comprehend saying that she was at the police station being interviewed.

My brother and her finally got home on Monday night, and were determined to not let the ordeal bug them. Then Tuesday hit, and D.C. and New York got attacked. The next day, her brother had a severe accident at work and was rushed to the hospital. It was learned he had some medical ailment that required them to amputate both his legs. She was there to endure all that.

It was a rough week.

I woke up around 10 that morning (eastern). News was playing on the radio (not a news station) and the first tower had just fallen. I was obviously glued to the television the rest of the morning. I remember going to Best Buy to buy the new POD album that dropped that day (and to this day I think that album was meant to come out that day), then going to work (I worked 1:30-10 back then), apparently numb to the fact that more than likely we would be closed. The reality of it, of course, hit me immediately as I drove into an empty parking lot. I remember stupidly asking the security guard who was there if we were closed despite having no reason to assume otherwise, and the guard gave me the well-deserved "duh" expression and then returned to his business. So I went back home, still numb, still in a state of disbelief, but already American flags were being prominently displayed in yards and on cars and I remember thinking over and over that nothing would ever be the same.

I was on my way to work, listening to a morning comedy radio show. Right before I got to work, they said how a plane had hit one of the towers. I went in my office and turned on the tv and saw smoke from the building. I called my step dad in to check it out. We were talking about what a crazy accident it was. Then we watched the second plane hit the other tower and that is when we knew this was no accident. Not much work got done that day. We were glued to the tv.

Making 9/11 jokes makes you such a badass.   ::) ::) ::)

Making jokes about 9/11 = cool
Making jokes about people getting fired from the gaming industry = go fuck yourself, die in a fire, etc. etc.

On 9/11, I was at school when it happened.  Bush supposedly visited an AFB that was near me that day.  We could hear airplanes but could not see them.  Pretty interesting.  Fun fact is that we still had football practice that day so we can get an edge in on a team that beat our asses anyway.  That is when we heard the airplanes.  9/11 was pretty surprising as most people didn't know it was going to happen.  I was getting tired of all the coverage by the third day, especially since there wasn't much that was new to report.

Eight years later, I don't have any real emotions towards 9/11.  The only problems I have these days regarding it are those that keep using it as a political tool and those that think it is funny to make themselves sound like elite badasses.  u r cool, we get it.

Both.  I don't think the joke was appropriate but it was funny in that they didn't know if people were going to laugh or shoot at them.  It was definitely a stupidly risky thing to do but I just don't care if some people feel offended by that.

Two nerdy confessions to make about 9/11:

1) Not long thereafter, I wondered what the attack would mean as far as the GameCube launch that November.
2) I was hoping the week of suspended baseball games would not be made up so Barry Bonds wouldn't pass 70 home runs.

The GameCube launched in Japan the week of 9/11.  Sales were pitiful, making Nintendo fans believe that the low demand was caused by the terrorist attack.

I also wondered about how Jay-Z's The Blueprint would fare, since it came out around 9/11 too.

Wow, that's easily the worst not-directly-related-to the Towers 9/11 story I've ever heard. I feel bad for your mom.

And thanks to this thread, I've just realized that I've never made a joke about 9/11. Which is kind of weird, except not.

I really don't joke about 9/11.

I remember being in middle school and everyone freaking out because there was a plane in the air over my middle school that didn't respond to the FAA grounding all flights. Not fun. I was about the only one with a cool head in a middle school where about everyone was hitting the panic button.

I'm not American and I don't get offended by the jokes, but I'd rather not crack jokes about it.  That Hulk Hogan thing is kind of funny.

I donīt make jokes.

Amen.

I make love. :heart

Hah! 9/11. My last name is the same last name as one of the hijackers. Not even remotely related as our family name is one of the most common ones in Saudi.

I remember hearing from some of my friends and cousins back in Virginia being ridiculed, beaten on, spat at, damn near pissed on. My mother's friends were abused, interrogated, and had their homes broken into by police without running proper background checks.

Yeah, I got lucky.
