Wasn't one great travesty on this day enough?

A corporate whore and the basic mold for everything wrong with the NBA today.

You have to be distinguished mentally-challenged, white or both to say Michael Jordan was an overrated basketball player.

Whether his influence on the NBA itself was negative, though, I'll jump on that train.

Change the NBA's name to the Me Me Me League. Thanks a lot Jordan!

There's nothing wrong with being a ball hog if you can score at high percentage and distribute the ball well.

Overrated.

He's the Beatles of basketball.

So he is the best ever, but people deny it just to swim against the current?

Most of them are Kobe fanboys.  Or at least it seems like that, here in LA.

Just saw Jordan interview on Sporscenter. He seems humble. I know one of the reasons he retired basketball at the time was because of not only the fame, but also the loss of his father.

He says that one of the reasons he quit was because he felt the sport had become so commercialized. But I have so much beef with that when he's the poster star of all that commercialization.

I know he hates being called the greatest basketball player, or at least, when approached on television. He just he hates being called that because he never got to play against players like Chamberlain.

Jordan seems humble on television. Is he really?

It is impossible to buy that when he literally sold his entire being to Nike. He became a human trademark. He loved the commercialization and benefited from it.  He wouldn't be getting the special treatments by refs that he got(which I would say totally inflated his stats) if everyone at the time wasn't profiting off him, including himself. He was a golden calf and nobody wanted him destroyed, because everybody was riding him to new financial heights.

If Islam made God Black, Jordan made Mickey Mouse black.

Michael Jordon was so badass that I needed to use both Karl Malone and John Stockton to have an argument on the schoolyard.

I'm watching the HOF induction ceremony only because of Jordan.

I'll even forgive him for going to Carolina. That was before I was old enough to know there were non-UNC teams, after all.

Good article on David Robinson:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/halloffame09/columns/story?columnist=sheridan_chris&page=090910robinsonHOF

Quote
That was when Pop composed himself, said he meant no disrespect to Jordan's career accomplishments, but then started speaking about class and character -- and how Robinson had exuded so much of it, so genuinely, for so many years, never being accused by anyone, anywhere of being anything even remotely resembling a phony -- something Jordan's enemies would whisper behind his back in those post-dynasty days.

Quote
Assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo told me later that morning how the Spurs had passed the hat in the locker room for a retirement gift for Robinson and his teammates had come up with $100,000 for the school. In Washington, Jordan's teammates reportedly refused even to give him a gift.

Lots of respect for Robinson. He's so classy.

Yea...I'm sure the calls had some effect on his stats...but not much. They had nothing to do with him dominating in the clutch with last second shots (except "the push" which Jordan would have sunk regardless). Jordan was the best, get over it

Kobe will be better by the end of his career  :teehee
[close]

Of course people are disappointed he didn't use his fame to do more than make himself money; he could have done more in inner cities especially. But I wouldn't judge that in relation to his on the court achievements and skills, which were amazing

David Robinson was also a pretty bright guy who served in the Navy instead of going to some basketball school.

For the most part, Robinson was one of the classiest athletes in the US.

But I lost some respect for him when he told anti-war Americans to leave the country and when he complained about lack of support after getting destroyed 1 on 1 by Dream.

Also, the whole tutoring of Duncan part is oversold.  That wasn't much that Robinson could have taught Duncan.  In terms of skills, Duncan was always more polished than Robinson.  Where Robinson was better than Duncan, was athleticism and that couldn't be taught.

I've got to admit that you've created a pretty good joke character.  You might want to tone down the mean-spiritedness a bit though.
