King of the hill is cool.  Its not hilarious but it never got stupid like the simpsons or other shows that have been on way too long.  I especially like that even though Hank is surrounded by distinguished mentally-challenged fellows, narcissists, and people who hate him (kahn, cotton) he never stopped being a good friend and standing up for their sorry selves.

Good ending to the series, just watched it. It was a really good series. It really didn't change THAT much in quality. Usually as series drag on year over year they kind of get more outlandish and over the top with cheap humor (Simpsons.) This was one of the rare times it didn't. It kind went in the opposite direction, I dunno, it had a different feel than earlier in the series.

Kinda like supporting characters and the more silly situations got phased out. I can't remember the last time it seemed like Connie had an episode where she was involved, seemed really odd she used to be in all the episodes hanging out with Bobby, being his girlfriend and that was a good plotline, and then she just kind of disappeared. Then you had Hank and his dad, LuAnne and her being a dumb blonde, Dale's crazy paranoid plots and stuff. It didn't get more outlandish, feels like it got more quiet and normal I guess. Kinda like if you said about 3 years ago that KOTH series ended and this is all the stuff that went on in their every day life since that point.

I think it was a show at its best when Hank was put in really weird, awkward situations to him. The whole plot with Debbie accidentally getting killed and Buck trying to set him up and Hank accidentally smoked weed.  :lol Or the episode where Hank unknowingly comes off as a pimp when one of Peggie's friends turns out to be a hooker.  :lol

I dunno, it kind of went from that silly awkward situations to more everyday life episodes of Hank getting his friend out of a jam, or bonding with Bobby, or something along those lines. I don't think that was KOTH at its best though, although by no means was it bad. It went out at series end better than 90% of shows have.

Yeah, he's the least liked character I think for sure. I don't think it was ever bad, guess I'm just trying to explain the vibe I got from it watching it the past few years. More domesticated or something I guess?

The old ones seemed more lively. Like there was more going on, some actual plotlines and stuff going on.

I hated Bill-centric episodes mostly.  I know he's a device for pathetic humor but it would have been nice if any progress he had made was actually applied to his character as the series evolved.  Oh wow, he overcame diabetes and gained some confidence in himself!  But, wait he's a pitiful wreck in the next episode again.  Although the episode where Hank has Bill confront "Lenore" while they were both in drag was awesome and they left that whole divorce behind mooooossstttllyy.

I know exactly what you mean. It didn't decline in quality nearly as much as The Simpsons, but I don't think they could have canceled it at a better time. They'd put straight-laced Hank in every awkward position imaginable, and beyond that the show was always a bit weak. Bobby was priceless until the end, though.

I thought some of his episodes were surprisingly poignant :( That flashbacks in that one episode where Hank found out he had Bill's name tattooed on the back of his head had me feeling all dawww-ish.

Yeah they had to have run out of ideas for Hank, it was inevitable. Arlen itself and Hank's family and friends calmed down as well. I always liked the Mega Lo Mart episodes and Hank dealing with them. Things pretty much played themselves out over time Luanne wasn't the naive single blonde anymore, Nancy wasn't with John Redcorn anymore, Connie and Bobby weren't together and Connie kind of disappeared. Seems like all the main backplots played themselves out and Hank was just doing everyday situation things.

I also liked some of the Bill's episode, a few others were when Bill joined high school again to get a last TD for his record, and the one where he thinks the Army experimented on him. It would have been cool to see a long term plot involving him though. Also I think everyone secretly wanted Dale to find out about Nancy and John Redcorn. That's gotta be the biggest thing left in the series they never did.

I understand why Bill never grows as a character.  Its the same reason kids never age in other animated sitcoms.  Characters are created for specific roles and Bill was just supposed to be the high functioning distinguished mentally-challenged fellow.  I guess it stems from me getting fed up for feeling sorry for myself and so I generally don't feel sorry for other people, fictional or otherwise.  So its nice to see a Bill episode where he actually does something to improve himself but then reverts back to a depressed slob using pity for attention.

I think the episode where Peggy decides not to tell Dale about the affair offered reasons enough for Dale to not find out.  Despite him being borderline schizophrenic he loves his family.  I'm not sure what to think of the episode where Nancy completely commits to her husband.  It seemed a little outlandish to imply affairs offer the stress relief necessary to prevent hairloss!  But its a comedy so craaazzzyyyyy situations!

More no taste confirmed.

I don't know how anyone can dislike it watching from the beginning. It has the most palpable characters in any animated sitcom on TV ever, and the writing for the first 6 or 7 seasons is absolutely superb. It makes South Park look like adolescent amateur hour. I used to say the same shit until I watched the first few episodes (cept the pilot sucks dick), but then I was hooked.

Maybe it resonates with me more because my dad is a lot like Hank. Not the hick, bible thumping, propane-worshipping stuff, but just his conservative attitude in general

King of the Hill is how you separate those who understand what is hip from those that can see what is good.

And KotH actually makes me laugh the hardest sometimes. Just little comments by the characters which crack me up. I think it helps that the characters remind me so much of people I know. Like my mom and Peggy Hill. I was playing scrabble with her this week and she busted out some combo of 3 different two letter words and said "That's how I win online."  Then I watch this final episode and Peggy busts out with the two letter scrabble line.

My (and his) point was that they're plausible archetypes with believable flaws and values instead of one-dimensional Mary Sues that serve solely as a mouthpiece for the writer to shoehorn his personal ideals into every episode (see: Kyle and Stan in South Park, Brian in Family Guy).

If dry humor isn't your thing, that's understandable, though, I guess

The  Amazon women from Futurama say it best:  "Comedy come from character, real situations, not abstract craziness."

Not saying that's a better or worse approach.  But I think KotH's seriously underrated by the geek set because it's a slow-paced, slice-of-life comedy that doesn't operate in the pop culture bubble that South Park and Family Guy do.

Bobby Hill is one of my favorite TV characters ever.  He's like an inverse Coach McGuirk.

King of the Hill was a good show.

I suspect many people don't like it because it relies on a lot of subtleties that a lot of cartoons lack.  Family Guy is on the opposite spectrum: FG jokes are in your face.  You don't really need to figure anything out because it is right there.  To make it even easier, these jokes are extended 2 to 3 times longer so you really know there is a joke.  South Park, Futurama (to an extent), and recent Simpsons episodes are the same way.

KOTH seems to continue from the old school Simpsons approach.  Any political or minor pop culture reference, the viewer needs to know about beforehand.  Plus the characters aren't clearly defined like in FG.  Hank is a conservative but he'll stand against the small town Texas good ol' boy conservative attitude.  He's pretty close minded but can open it briefly.  With FG, you know where they stand and don't really waver much if at all.

Good show but I stopped watching when the Lucky character was introduced.
