Himuro sucks.

I'm so sorry you're so sensitive.

At least I didn't call you a distinguished black fellow, like you did when you caught feelings for Kanye presenting a poor face to white people.

Don't you realize that people like you, who throw out that word when they feel like a black person isn't acting the way they should, will serve as an example for white bigots when they feel like disparaging a black person who isn't behaving the way they want them to? You're a worse enabler than Kanye is, yet "sucks" is a kinder way of putting things than "distinguished black fellow"
himu is thinking ahead-when enough black celebrities fuck up and send blacks back into slavery; himu will hold the prized position of massa's right hand man. he won't look foolish when he is a house negro and the rest are working in the field.

I finally watched the Beyonce video in question, God damn is that video mediocre. Its her and two other chicks dancing in a empty area and this is one of the best videos this decade? Music videos must suck MASSIVE dick.

I actually liked that video quite a bit, I thought the dancing was cool. It's modeled after some gay (literally) Atlanta dance scene trend apparently.

But really, aesthetically and everything I thought it was a great video. I haven't seen the Taylor Swift video in question but I doubt it's better, tbh.

You mean besides online?

They air music videos at the gym I go to, but it's usually the same few songs over and over - Poker Face, Finger 11-Paralyzer, the Paramore song (chick is hot), some weird euro-pop stuff, and a lot of slow mellow R&B. Actually I saw the music video to Elements of Life there once, which was kinda cool.

 :rofl

Kanye really is a douche. I've never listened to Taylor Swift music before, and I'm sure she makes shitty music, but that was a very bad move.

Beyonce was so classy for letting Taylor Swift come on stage.

Kanye West's last album sold 1.5 million copies. Taylor Swifts last album is currently at over 4 million copies and still selling. The album has been on the U.S. Billboard 200 for 43 weeks (November 2008 - September 10, 2009). All consecutive weeks in the top 12, and is currently at #9.

What do you mean he hasn't been relevant in half a decade? Graduation sold almost a million its first week out (after Late Registration sold 2.5 million in its first year), and 808s and Heartbreak has sold at least 2 million units in the U.S. alone. He also produced at least half of The Blueprint III, which is sure to go platinum, critically acclaimed or not. He may be a douche, but he's still relevant in a major way.

Yeah, as far as sales go he's still there, but that's clearly not what I meant when I said relevant. He's nowhere near as good as he thinks he is, and whatever talent he had on College Dropout has been tainted by his ridiculous ego. This is the same guy that said his music is medicine, for fuck's sake.

I respect Kanye West as a musician - not only do I think he's culturally relevant, but he has a knowledge of music history that few of peers have.

That said, the guy has a massive ego, but it's tough to understand what's schtick and what's legitimate douchey behavior.

Kanye is not a musician. Blueprint production, while sounding great, boiled down to him looping soul samples. He doesn't flip samples like great producers like RZA or Dilla or even Dre. Kanye can't make a song without a sample, and recently he's trended more toward's Diddy style laziness (utilizing co-producers heavily, not really digging for samples, using popular samples, etc).

Stronger is a great example of lazy production. Of course it sounds good - it uses the most catchy part of the song.

Dre flips samples more than Kanye. Plus he'll sample multiple songs, not just one for the loop and another for the drums like Kanye. I'd say he's more respectable than Kanye, despite his recent shitty piano obsession

Hey, I like Stronger - it helps that I own like three Daft Punk albums too. :lol

Regardless of his ranking amongst hip hop producers, he is a musician. Call it lazy or what have you, but the man can manipulate samples to make catchy songs.

He's gone on record a bunch of time talking about music history, including rock, and I would state he's more knowledgeable in that area than a lot of his contemporaries. Does that make him better? Not necessarily.

I think it's tough to argue that he has no talent considering The College Dropout. Graduation is arguably his most commercial album and it's still relatively catchy.

Haters.

I actually completely agree. Compared to other mainstream rappers and producers I think Kanye has a wider range of musical tastes and influence than his peers. I actually like reading his blog to see what he's listening to. He has pretty good taste in music.

I find The Late Registration better than College Dropout production wise.

Like who? If you said he's more knowledgeable than the average rapper I'd agree. But hip hop producers often know their stuff, regardless of talent. They "have" to have a wide musical ear given what they do. Whereas many rappers and hip hop fans have some of the most closed minded taste imaginable (imo)

I wouldn't say he's talentless (although granted, I've said that on GAF, but only to troll idiots). College Dropout is one of the best hip hop albums of the 00s, and Late Registration is good too. But at the end of the day he's an average rapper, a slightly above average lyricist (and that's mainly due to the shitty-ness of his peers), and decent producer. His best attribute is his amazing ear for samples and hooks.

And he clearly has an inferiority complex, just like his big brother Jay-Z.

edit: Brion made Late Registration

Kanye's inferiority complex is much more tame than Jay-Z's though...

Or is it?

I think it's quite telling how despite the fact I don't think Kanye is near the top of the pool of rappers or producers, he still produced the hip hop album that got me back into hip hop after a 3-4 year hiatus. I could use another College Dropout to renew my interest in the genre.

Whereas many rappers and hip hop fans have some of the most closed minded taste imaginable (imo)

It's not really an opinion. We have established that as fact in our many debates on rap.

Considering people know him first and foremost as a rapper, you'd have to say that he knows more on music history than his peers.

Even amongst producers, he still has a rudimentary knowledge of music history that supersedes a lot of his peers. Most producers do look outside of hip hop for inspiration, however, they tend to look at stuff like jazz, R&B, etc.

I still think the influences tend to stay limited within the African-American musical experience, which you can claim is the foundation for all other imitators, but other cultures have made some interesting stuff over the years on their own.

Kanye is succesful because he's able to sample stuff from music that a wide demographic can connect to.

There's no denying that Dre makes those great sounding smash hits, but as far as the manipulation of samples are concerned? I'd have to go with Kanye. This is not me showing support; I don't really want to listen to either of 'em.

Truly great hip-hop producers?

What Willco says is truth. How many producers do you know sampling electronic or rock? They almost always sample rap, r&b or jazz, which is good and all but extremely limited compared to what Kanye has worked with.

Of course, it's funny how arguably the most sampled hip hop beat of all time (Planet Rock) sampled an electronic song (Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express) when most hip hop producers don't touch that genre.

Kanye is successful because he makes catchy music with messages that many people can identify. It has little to do with his sampling - the soul samples that dominated Blueprint, CD, and LR appealed to a wide demographic as well. Although sure, when word went out that he was sampling Daft Punk a wide range of folks' ears tuned in. Only to realize it was a pretty meh production. But that's beyond the point

Nor is his sampling particularly revolutionary. Electronica and hip hop have gone together for some time, Timbaland was doing that before Kanye etc

And I'd ask again who these peers Kanye supersedes in musical knowledge are.
