So a friend wanted to buy a Tonka truck for her kid, and she informed me that they were made of plastic now and have rounded corners.  I had Tonka trucks as wee lad and they were made of die cast metal and had sharp edges.

Do kids even get hurt these days with the proliferation of plastic toys, helmets and knee pads up the wazoo, and dodgeball being banned in most schools?

Tonka RIP.

Well, it's only reasonable, since we as humans are apparently evolving to 100% autistic with attention deficit hyperactivity disorders. Probably unknown widespread effects of radioactive fallout from nuclear tests.

I clobbered my sister over the head with one of the old die-cast Tonka trucks.  So yes, they probably should be plastic -- let's not think for a second that kids are any smarter than a sack of shit.

I had several Tonka trucks and Ertl tractors and I never clobbered my sister over the head with one of them.

That's just a matter of circumstance.

You probably did. It is likely that she clobbered you right back, leading to memory loss of the whole event altogether.

kids are too soft now. half of the things we used to play with would never be allowed on a modern playground.

the elementary school I went to had monkey bars like eight feet above concrete, so there was an added incentive not to fall. I saw some a few months back where kids could drag their feet on the ground. where is the danger in hanging upside down on that? kids in the yard used to break all sorts of bones jumping from the gigantic swings we used to have. the airtime was fantastic on those, and I doubt those are around now. but it was fun!

also, when I was young, almost every playground had a sharp, rusty spike grounded in cement where some tetherball used to be. "jump the spike" probably isn't around either, and that's just cheating children out of their youth.  :'(

Oh yeah, I remember one of my friends as a child that had a huge custom-built wooden swingset. We would challenge each other to get as high as we possibly could and just fly out of our seats. We were, like, 8, 9. It was awesome.
