Microsoft Releasing 250GB Modern Warfare themed xbox360

Infinity Ward announced at a press event in Los Angeles today that, to commemorate the release of the game, Microsoft will be releasing a brand new model of the Xbox 360 based on Modern Warfare 2.

This new console will be black, with Modern Warfare 2 branding, and will also come packing a 250GB HDD (so, yes, it is real), a copy of the game and two wireless controllers. It'll be $399, and is apparently already available for preorder.

I came in here to say this was distinguished mentally-challenged, but if it includes the game and a second controller at that price then who can complain? Pretty much rules out any further price cuts this season though.

Does MW2 even have splitscreen?

I'm surprised at how un-horrifying that looks.

The value is actually pretty good, all things considered, but I don't think introducing a higher priced SKU at this point in time is an effective strategy.

This will be the 5th Call of Duty game on Xbox 360. How many new users is this supposed to attract? Seems more like something that will resell to the current base. It could be attractive to a CoD fan with an older 360 that is (or is closed to being) out of warranty and shows signs of breaking down. Maybe somebody with a full hard drive, but $400 just to get more space?

We're four years into the 360's lifetime. The high-end market has been thoroughly exhausted.

True that.

I'll snatch up a 120GB as soon as the price comes down. If I can get one for $70 or so after Amazon's $30 credit card signup bonus, I will do so.

It's a pretty good deal with all that's included, and it's (a little) cheaper than buying all those items separately.

welp, guess MS will win one month this season.  MW2 will sell shit tons and I think this bundle is actually a really enticing deal for newcomers...2 controllers, new game hype, and larger HDD.

$399? lol

I don't care if it included a terabyte HD, MS is going the wrong fucking direction.  This i-pod model of theirs will only go so far.  Watch them get their butt kicked this winter from the PS3 slim.

That's a good price for anyone looking to buy a 360, extra controller, and MW2.  I don't see what the big deal is.

That's my opinion. I don't necessarily think this is a bad idea, but I think that putting any sort of marketing emphasis on this would be a mistake, like on certain Sundays when the circulars would only feature the most expensive 360 option. Now is the time to always, always, always make the Arcade the front-and-center SKU in advertisements. Show the Elite, show this, but never not show the Arcade.

As said, I think this is an option that would appeal mostly to the current base, so the best place to market it would be on XBL.

It isn't going to sell well at all outside of a few collectors and a few die hard Call of Duty fans, which might be enough to sell several thousand.

It is way too much money.  With the PS3 slim down to $299, I'm not sure how an SKU of over $300 will fly these days.  At least in previous years, since the PS3 was $400-600, having a $399 SKU would be fine because your competitor was priced similarly.  Now?  I just don't think that is going to work.  Besides, it has been out since 2005.  Having a model out there for the same price it launched four years ago isn't really a good idea.

Maybe MS is making only 25,000 of them or something.

I understand the value in the 360 package but I also understand the value in the PS3 slim.  Looking at the two together, I feel the PS3 slim with MW2 minus the extra HD space and extra controller is a much better deal.  This 360 package will play to a certain crowd, but I can't imagine that it's a very big market.

Like Bocsius said, the problem here is that they've been on the market for 4 years now and they're coming out with packages that are at the same price point when the system was introduced. I really thought by now they would've been selling the system for much less than they currently are.  I know the RROD fiasco probably had something to do with effecting their pricing timelines but IMO they need to reevaluate their strategy.  I think the PS3 slim is going to take a big bite out of their ass.

MS plans of "relaunching" the 360 with Natal next year....hopefully for them that means an entire system redesign as well to lower base prices.  Just needs to happen to keep this system afloat for the next 3-5 years, or for however long they're projecting it.

The big deal (if it is one) is that with the PS3 now $299, this holiday season is all about looking competitive.  360 did well because it offered similar power to the PS3 but at a cheaper price (and cheaper build quality :teehee )  Microsoft could charge $399 bundles in the past because the PS3 was around that price and with additional games, controllers, etc. it looked like a much better deal, even if they were the same price.  With this new bundle this fall, if it is in the newspaper, consumers are going to see that the 360 is $100 more than the PS3.  At this point, the PS3 is no longer the most expensive game system this fall; now it is the 360.

It's a bad idea because it is no longer 2006-2008 anymore.  $329 should be the most they should charge for it.

A standalone? You can buy mine if you want, got it with the Elite but I'm sticking with my old HDD for now.

The 360 already has $199, $249, and $299 SKUs.  It's not like the PS3 comes with a game and second controller for $300.  This is a bundle and my point is that it's a good deal for the price, considering what you're getting.  If this was the 60GB system and the game for $299 though, yeah, that's certainly looking a hell of a lot more attractive.

Granted that they are using a much more popular game, but this seems awfully Sonyish, doesn't it? Version shuffling to feign price drops, and bundles in place of price drops.

How much?

$60 shipped

fwiw, this is actually a good deal.  The regular elite at 120gigs is $300.  This is the Elite, 250 gigs, Modern Warfare 2 and extra controller.  Ignoring the hard drive, the game is $60 and an extra controller is $50.

$399? lol

If you're talking about having different sku, rumor is that there is a 250 gig PS3 slim planned.  Whether or not it's just one 250 gig sku or separate one isn't really known yet.
