Uncharted 2: GOTY?
« on: September 18, 2009, 09:36:39 PM »
Is there anything this year that can possibly challenge Uncharted 2 for GOTY?

As PC Prince and Captain Xbot, it pains me to admit this but it's almost certain that Sony fans have finally gotten the must-own title that they've been waiting for.  Early reviews have unanimously proclaim that  Uncharted 2 is amazing.   Best production values of the year, much improved controls, various multiplayer modes,.... the list goes on and on.  It's gonna be a tough troll even for Drinky Crow.

Will be hard to beat Demon's Souls.

But I think it'll be my multiplayer GOTY.

Sounds pretty awesome. I don't even know what GOTY means these days, but the game seems wicked. Shouldn't be a surprise, though; Naughty Dog is a good developer and Uncharted was a good game. Gunplay has been much improved if the beta is any indication, and yeah, the presentation is top notch.

Yeah I think Uncharted 2 will go down as one of the years best.  It is the fall/holiday release I want to play the most.  I will be replaying the first again before I can dive into the sequel.

Batman's just the one campaign and the challenge maps.  Uncharted 2 offers campaign, co-op modes, and various versus modes.  More options, more replay value, blah blah blah.

I don't give a damn about Batman's challenge maps and I probably won't touch Uncharted 2's multiplayer.  I'm just talking about pure enjoyment from the campaign.  Right now Batman AA is the one to beat, imo.

Sony's starting early on this one.

Seriously, what the hell is MS thinking?  I know that fanboys oversell the exclusives angle but at some point they will make a difference.

Although multiplatform games continue to be better on the 360 90% of the time, there are probably less than 1% of gamers who know about that.  Now that the PS3 is no longer price constrained, it will simply look like the better deal to most people.  Even if potential customers didn't care for the PS3's blu-ray advantage, they would still see it as the system with more games to play.

Most people who want to play Gears or Halo probably got a 360 already.  What's out there to entice new buyers?

Unless Modern Warfare 2 is a giant drop in quality, that game will be as far as those who cover games are concerned.

Uncharted 2 is going to be awesome (at least the multiplayer) but I don't know if it will be GOTY for me.  The only two games I can see topping Infamous for me are Alpha Protocol and Assassin's Creed 2.

Most people who want to play Gears or Halo probably got a 360 already.  What's out there to entice new buyers?

Natal

If they can capture the same audience that bought the Wii for novelty, then why not.

Damn the PC version of Batman looks drop dead gorgeous.

Love the game as well.  Have the highest percentage of trophies for Batman than any other PS3 game I own.  It isn't really fair to compare Batman to Uncharted 2.  UC2 has the backing of Sony to be a blockbuster title, and it will be within all aspects.  We should just be happy Rocksteady was able to make a quality product within the confines of working with Eidos.

Infamous was just pure entertainment, and that weighs in heavy for me. Effortless daredevil super-hero stuff is neat. But I think pound by pound and on an objective scale, Uncharted 2 is likely the "better" game. And in terms of production values, they aren't even in the same generation.

As for what the 360 offers, it will be Live from now an until the end of the generation. It's a big draw.

yeah, infamous was a bad looking game for the most part.  Back when it came out, people were saying that Sucker Punch themselves said it was a C grade engine, and that Sly 4 is being made on a good one.  But it was basically the type of gameplay I enjoy done really well.  I had so much fun playing that game.

It has been 4 years since 360 was released, 3 years since PS3. The software that is going to sell these systems is already out. From this point forward, the things that will drive further adoption are the following:

1) Holidays (and, on a more personal and spread-out level, birthdays)
2) More attactive pricing.
3) Further abandonment of the PS2 by software developers.
4) The Unknown. A game changer, something revolutionary that isn't just another piece of hyped up software. Natal? A game that comes out of nowhere?

You're not going to see a in-generation sequel cause a considerable and prolonged spike in sales. It just isn't going to happen.

You know...what the hell does MS have this holiday season?

They have a Halo game that isn't a Halo game.  Super.  Not to mention charging full price for an expansion pack.

I guess they'll rely on 3rd parties again.  Not a bad strategy, but a boring one for a multi platform gamer like myself.

Sony can win this holiday by offering diversity. MS only has two fps games and Forza 3 this year.

While Sony has Ratchet, Uncharted, Demon's Souls and probably Gran Turismo 5.

Modern Warfare 2 will definitely sell better than Halo ODST. MW2 is going to be the biggest fps game this year. And it's multiplatform.

It had some strong points, like the lighting (especially evident in the sewers), but some of the strengths actually worked against it. The game actually had pretty good textures, but given the aliasing, that only served to make it look more cluttered. The game was awesome, though.

It's distinguished mentally-challenged to start talking about GOTY shit already.  Honestly tho, I'm not sure what's coming out that's even any good.  So, my GOTY will probably be the same as last year:  Fallout 3 GOTY edition.

Although I have a sneaking suspicion that lots of sites and mags will end up giving Dragon Age a bunch of awards.

I liked the graphics sometimes. Textures were quite good. But the dof was an abomination. Everything outside a 20 feet radius was blurry shit.

Out of curiosity, what are the GOTY games of the past few years? Doesn't have to be consensus. I can't really recall many of them.

I can only think of Halo in 2001 and KOTOR in 2003.

Last year was a tie between Fallout 3 and Little Big Planet
2007 was Bioshock tie Mario Galaxy
2006 Gears of War (FFXII is my pick)
2005 Resident Evil 4
2004 Half Life 2

Something like that.

The general reception towards Dragon Age hasn't been too good.  It doesn't help that people mention that the main version is for PC to satisfy fans of Baulders Gate and old Bioware games.  Not to say it's a bad thing, but anything PC related means it's invisible towards most writing about games.

I agree with the above but I think Gran Turismo 5 could be a decent system seller.  It won't result in tens of millions of sales but it will see a pretty decent sales spike.

I also agree with SG in that Microsoft has jack shit for the holidays.  I don't think gamers are going to latch onto ODST like they would Halo 3.  The game will be lucky to sell a couple of million copies; which would be good if it was any other non Halo game but for Halo, it would be a low point.  Modern Warfare 2 will most likely be the biggest seller with ODST all but forgotten (kind of like Halo Wars).
