Problem installing more RAM. Halp plz.
« on: September 19, 2009, 12:49:58 PM »
So I built my computer (first time ever doing it) and I've got this kind of RAM in it http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?Sku=C13-7082.  I built it with 2 x 1gig sticks and I'm trying to add two more 1gig sticks.  They're exactly the same as the RAM I put in my machine when I built it because I accessed the order form and reordered the same item.

I install the memory in the two open slots on my mother board and when I turn the comp on I get those three beeps of doom that tell me there's a problem and when I take the new ram out the comp boots up fine.

Do I need to increase the virtual memory or set it to system managed size?  I'm running XP.   :(

General troubleshooting:

Make sure to separate which RAM is which, and then try one of the new sticks with one of the old.  Do this for both new sticks.  If there's no problems there..  hm.  Maybe flash your bios by removing the motherboard battery?

Three beeps is defective memory. Your memory is failing the post RAM test. One last test would be to put the new memory where the old memeory was a turn it on. If it still beeps, you got bad RAM. If it works, you might have to read the manual to find out what the maximum RAM is and what flavors it takes. I've seen some say that max RAM is 4gb, but it can only do that with 2 2GB sticks.

It's possible, we'll see.  I was away all weekend so I have to try it tonight.  :-*
