Why does Hollywood have such an obsession with A Christmas Carol?
« on: September 22, 2009, 11:45:25 PM »
Yeah, I mean, it's a timeless classic of literature and all that and I enjoy watching it every Christmas, but why are they still making MORE? Yes, okay, they're going with Zemeckis CG this time around, but what could it possible offer that hasn't already been done a thousand times before in all the other versions? Looking at Wikipedia, there are at least SIXTEEN different version of the movie released over the past 100 years. I just don't get it.

Yes, but this is in IMAX 3D.

And actually, to be fair, it's not even close to being one of the most retreaded stories in Hollywood.

Yes, but this is in IMAX 3D.

They should rework the Muppet's Christmas Carol to be shown in IMAX 3D. I'd go see that.

Well, so far, I don't think they've ever managed to mess up A Christmas Carol (although I'm sure Jim Carey will give it a good college try). There's a solid foundation to work with, a good story that lends it sell well to theater, so you just plug in some new actors (or cartoons, or muppets, or whatever) and let it work.

Most new attempts at Christmas stories are terrible.  Christmas Carol is tried and true and safe.

A Christmas Story is the best Christmas story of all time.  It's truly Christman in film form.

And have you guys ever seen the new cartoon specials they put out for Christmas?  Did we really need an hour long adaptation of "Grandma got run over by a reindeer"?
