"In a very difficult economy, I couldn't be more optimistic about our fortunes for the rest of the year and for the future," he said.

But he noted that higher demand for the PS3 could leave some retailers out of stock.

"If things continue at this pace, it is conceivable that there will be product shortages," Tretton said.

Sales of the PlayStation 3 in Japan have dropped from last week's massive 151,000 spike, to 55,344 units.

Last week's rocketing numbers were due to the release of the slim PS3 in the region, but sales this week still put the console ahead of its home rivals from Microsoft and Nintendo.

The Wii sold 17,568 units according to figures from Media Create, with Microsoft's Xbox 360 managing just 7568 sales.

However, with the release of two new Pokemon titles, Nintendo's DSi was the leading machine in the region, with 66,498 units sold.

The PSP shifted 18,375 units, the DS Lite 11,179 and the PS2 2612 for the week ended September 13.

I remember a few months after launch when sales were mediocre and Sony PR used the shortages line. There were stacks of PS3s everywhere. Good times.

1 million over 3 weeks equates to about 17 million in a year if we make two bad assumptions:
1) the boost is sustainable
2) there are no seasonal fluctuations

17 million is certainly an improvement, although not up to past PlayStation standards. But we know that each assumption is incorrect. The first broken assumption would drop the 17 million number into something that's pretty ho-hum. On the other hand, the second broken assumption would push the number to an eye-popping, Wii or PS2-like level.

It's a good short-term number, probably beats Wii, certainly beats 360 for the time period. But it doesn't jump out as something that will change the tides. As always, more time and data is needed.

The 1 mill is about PS3 slim,not PS3 in general

Considering that there where like "0 new" PS3s before September and older models have gone the way of the dodo...it is more like 1 mill slims where sold to someone in 3 weeks...PR obviously

Also the number is based on "Sony internal estimates"-whatever that means
There is no NPD,Chart-Track,GFK,Media-Create reference,etc...

And Jack Trenton-"If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that's been on shelves for more than five minutes, I'll give you 1,200 bucks for it."
