Is it only first party games that try to force a firmware update on you? Can I get away with playing this without having to update my PSP's year old cfw?

I played the first demo (first part of that video) and it was a lot of fun.  The second part as the evil guy was a bit dull.  There are two demos on PSN.  I'd buy it if it wasn't $30 and coming out the same day as uncharted 2, brutal legend and wots3; maybe for $20.
