The tearing is only really bad on Chapter 2 or 3 - the village level

Yeah, it's very weird, that's the only place I noticed it, and it doesn't seem to be a particularly technically demanding area.

life/magic bar extensions.

I never did them, not my kind of thing.  Didn't do the trials in DMC or NG either.  I just like to FIGHT in these games.

I did a few but was never able to find all of them.  That, all the treasure chests, and infinite climax mode are the only things I'm missing for a perfect 1000 but I dunno if I'll ever bother. :(

You usually get a broken witch heart or a broken magic orb, which will increase your health/magic bar if you collect enough. The Alfheims also count as a verse at the end-of-chapter screen, so they're basically required if you are going to play for score or Pure Platinums. That's one of my biggest complaints about the game, since many of the Alfheims are just fucking stupid (jump in the air for 90 seconds herp derp).

So what is the consensus on this game?  Is it anywhere as good as NG or DMC3?

I don't think it's better than either of those, but it's around the same level give or take.  I'm a DMC fan so I'd put it around the same level as DMC4/NG2 and a notch below DMC3/NG.

It's absolutely 100% worth playing if you enjoy good action games.

Overall: NGB > DMC3 >>> Bayo > NG2 >>> DMC4

For pure combat, NG2 is untouchable. But it has lots of problems that drag it down. Same with Bayonetta, but the problems aren't as bad. Bayo is clearly a finished game... Actually, it's the only finished action game this gen...

DMC4 isn't better than anything, demi. And no DMC game is better than NG. NG2 is questionable thanks to rocket spamming and other lil cheap shit.

I just acquired the weapon Durga, how do I use the lightning version?

spin the stick and press K or P (whichever you have it equipped to).

Some transformations are story based, but I believe you need to buy the crow from the shop. IIRC, the perfumes add little things to the costume if you have certain items equipped. Like if you have the durgas equipped on both her hands and her feet, the perfume will add a cat tail to her and cat ears. It's purely cosmetic. I might be remembering that wrong though, I haven't played in a while.

Played this for the first time last week. Didn't get a taste of the higher difficulties because my friend is a scrub that hadn't gotten past normal, but (and it might have just been because I was really stoned and had been eating soma all day) I think it was the most fun I've had with a hack n slash/action game this gen. NG2 was a putrid turd that's not even worth a rental, so I won't bother comparing it to that, but I think I'd put it above DMC4 -- and I played the SHIT out of DMC4.

All this time I was putting it off because I was butthurt about the controls being non-configurable, and after 15 minutes I was totally used to them :lol

I've said some mess about this game in the past.

sooooo forget all that. the last 3rd of the game completely makes up for any shortcomings up to that point and are so mindblistering awesome that it rises this game to godly tier.

game wins the award for best character action game of the year and also the award for most ending, most story, and most ending.

a+++ thumbs up, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

omg Bayonetta just gets better and better. After fiddling with default weapons I'm finally getting into weapon change and it's DMC3 all over again. I especially like how in NG fashion, each weapon has its benefits against specific enemy types. I love how you unlock weapons too. And the side chapters with goals in DMC fashion are great too. Fighting a whole slew of angels with witch time disabled is awesome. :bow

7 hours clocked and I still haven't gone past chapter 4. It's DMC3 all over again for me. I played that game for like 40 hours before beating it because I would replay each chapter a bazillion times until I mastered the game.

The Alfheim missions are great until you realize you have to play them every single time you do a scoring run.

Want that glorious Pure Platinum? Jump on these enemies' heads for 5 minutes LOL!

I dont know if you are being sarcastic but yes, the Alfheims count as verses of the chapter and count toward your overall score. If you don't Pure Platinum every verse in a chapter, you can't get a Pure Platinum medal at the end.

I hate the Alfheims that don't involve normal combat. Having to do them eeeevery time I want to play the game sucks,  and it really puts me off from playing the game any more than I already have. I'll still Pure Platinum every difficulty with every character eventually though. Would've done it by now if it weren't for the vehicle missions and the Alfheims...

Well you can still get a Platinum medal at the end if you skip the Alfheims and hidden verses, it's the Pure Platinum that requires you to play every fight.
