Poland, Sep 26: Despite receiving criticism from human right's group, Poland passed a law which, states that in some cases paedophiles must undergo chemical castration.

Under Poland's centre-right government law, chemical therapy is mandatory for paedophiles convicted of raping children under the age of 15 years or a close relative.

"The purpose of this action is to improve the mental health of the convict, to lower his libido and thereby to reduce the risk of another crime being committed by the same person," said the government.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said in 2008, he demanded obligatory castration for paedophiles, whom he termed as 'degenerates'.

Tusk said he did not believe "one can use the term 'human' for such individuals, such creatures".

"Therefore I don't think protection of human rights should refer to these kind of events," he said.

However, the human rights groups objected to the law.

"Introducing any mandatory treatment raises doubts as such a requirement is never reasonable and life can always produce cases that lawmakers could never have even dreamt of," said Piotr Kladoczny from the Helsinki Foundation of Human Rights.

"If somebody is of sound mind, we punish him. If he is sick, we try to cure him - that's how it works in Polish law.

"This bill introduces both approaches. As far as I know, this makes our law the strictest in Europe on this issue."

A quick glance at the wiki on chemical castration tells me that this isn't permanent, i.e., the "therapy" is a perpetual treatment that is reversible when stopped. If that's truly the case, why are human rights groups getting so butthurt over this?

I kind of didn't explain my whole point.  If rapists/molesters like to do what they do for sadistic reasons, then it makes sense that they would still commit the crimes even if they got no physical stimulation out of it.

I mean, people who do these things have to enjoy hurting others so I kind of doubt that this will really lower their motivation.

I think you missed the point...  Pedophiles are sexually attracted to minors.  It's not about rape/power.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), pedophilia is specified as a form of paraphilia in which a person either has acted on intense sexual urges towards children, or experiences recurrent sexual urges towards and fantasies about children that cause distress or interpersonal difficulty.

The problem for child molesters is that there's no real consensus on whether they do it for physical or mental reasons.  Maybe their brain chemistry is messed up causing them to be sexually attracted to children, maybe they do it because they were abused, or maybe both?  I'm worried that people are going to assume that if a pedophile is chemically castrated, that he is automatically "fixed".
