FTC: Bloggers must disclose payments for reviews

PHILADELPHIA — The Federal Trade Commission will require bloggers to clearly disclose any freebies or payments they get from companies for reviewing their products.
It is the first time since 1980 that the commission has revised its guidelines on endorsements and testimonials, and the first time the rules have covered bloggers.
But the commission stopped short Monday of specifying how bloggers must disclose any conflicts of interest.
The FTC said its commissioners voted 4-0 to approve the final guidelines, which had been expected. Penalties include up to $11,000 in fines per violation.
The rules take effect Dec. 1.

Actually, won't this make forums worse as far as shills go? I'm assuming they'll just up the amount of "forum users" to push hype and give favourable user reviews to help push their wares.

There's got to be something more to it than that. The FTC shouldn't be able to regulate what people are saying in blogs. At minimum, the blog should be owned by the company and/or a contracted representative (employee, ad agency, etc.) of the company. Some schmuck that gets a free Viewtiful Joe bobblehead from Capcom shouldn't have to say as much on their blog.

It's no surprise that the quality of gaming journalism is generally poor.

Aside from getting paid, the majority of people working in that field are really no different from the mega fanboys on gaming forums.

It's why gamers should come to The Bore instead for gaming info that is reliable, useful and unbiased.

Over here, unlike most gaming sites, we rarely find a game to be better than 8/10 because we don't care about elevating a game's reputation just
to show support for a corporate entity or to win some points for an imaginary side in fanboy battles.

Because The Bore doesn't tolerate blind fanboyism and corporate worship, gamers can always trust it to tell them how good a game really is.

This shouldn't effect the majority of Blogs. It's the ones that 11/10 I suspect that are on the take. This should help make it clear. But then again, the Blog police would be few and unable to really police the nets.

It as simple as we reviewed a courtesy Review copy of the game that we received from the publisher.

Now we can track the money hats the MS gives to all the Sony biased sites (amidoinitrite?)

I can understand this if the publishers are sending review copies of a DS game inside of a new DS or something but would this also apply to publishers who just send posters, bobble-heads, or even a making-of DVD? I mean, that's not really gonna affect the review scores I'd think.

I doubt this will get enforced too much but the fact that this new rule causes a bunch of people to say how this is the end of gaming journalism shows just how lowly people think of it. Not that I disagree, I just found it funny. Unsurprisingly, the gaming symposium/inane circle jerk did precisely jack shit to improve the quality of it.
