Quote
Donnie Darko" helmer Richard Kelly has posted in his MySpace blog that they have finally locked picture on "Southland Tales".

Set in a near-future post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, the film follows the criss-crossed destinies of an action film actor (The Rock) stricken with amnesia, an ex-porn star (Sarah Michelle Gellar) in the midst of reconverting, and twin brothers (Seann William Scott) whose destinies becomes confused with that of all mankind.

The current runtime on 'Tales' now stands at 137 mins, a full 27 minutes shorter than the "work-in-progress" version shown to much derision at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

Kelly confirmed he has tightened the narrative and Justin Timberlake just recorded his final voice work last Sunday.

There's still some visual effects touches to be added, but a release date and trailer are due quite soon.

Finally, he also revealed that he has been prepping "The Box" simultaneously while editing. A March 2007 production start in Virginia is being targeted.

First of all, am I the only one on here that likes Donnie Darko?

Second of all, do you think this final cut will fare better than the Cannes version everyone hated?

Potential for greatness, but people said it sucked.  Also, Donnie Darko has a l337 cult following.

I dunno, didn't Donnie Darko have a notoriously bad early cut?  Maybe he pulled this movie together, too.  I'm still interested; by all means Darko should've been a disaster, but it somehow worked in the end.  Mostly worked.

I'm sure the eventual Director's Cut will in fact be the best version of Tales, much like Darko.

My main problem with Kelly right now is, he just seems to be grasping for weird, unusual themes to throw at the wall, rather than taking much time to actually discuss them.

Actually, I liked the original cut of Darko better than the Director's Cut.

I dunno, it's been a while since I've seen either, but I remember being disappointed by the alterations.

Well, I guess it was the fact that some explanation was added to quell the fanboy mouth-throthing was what really picked it up for me. Oh, and the music cues are infinitely better in the DC.

And who can say no to a commentary w/ Kevin Smith (On the DVD, I mean)? :P

First off: I like Donnie Darko
Second: Donnie Darko is incredibly overrated
Third: the director's cut sucks. Too much hand-holding ruins the fun open-to-interpretation feel of the theatrical cut

Finally: I think Richard Kelly is a one hit wonder

Now that I think about it, I really hate that I gave away my original cut to a girl I liked at the time.

Because I am becoming more and more convinced that the Directors is WAY too drawn out.
