Good ways to help battle depression.
« on: October 06, 2009, 04:19:35 PM »
Alright, I've been crazy depressed since april, and even worse since my mother died (aug 26). I'm just calling all of eb for suggestions on battling depression. things they do to help them get through.

Any suggestion works. Hey, I figured this might help other depressed and suicidal eb'ers out. :lol

*ah, lets try and make it so us dirty poors can do it too!* :P

I try to be around people when I can.  It helps sometimes.  Or helping others.  I feel like if I help someone else, I can feel better.  Just what I try sometimes.  But I'd love to see what else comes of this thread.  I'm sick of feeling depressed as well.   :-\

Read some really depressing/disturbing stories. Then it's like "Wow, I guess my life really isn't all THAT bad."

Or watch a bunch of comedies or other light stuff. Zombieland might do the trick.

Keep yourself busy.  Sitting around with nothing to do will just make you more depressed, take it from an old pro.  Find a cause that you can get behind and volunteer for it.

Also, exercise.

It's a small thing, but when I'm feeling down, I like watching old, cheesy cartoons on Boomarang. Feels good, man.

you need a constructive hobby.

if you have money and don't mind the manchildness of it, buy legos.

if you have money and like giant robots - who doesn't - you can buy and build those gundam models/set things. doesn't last more than a couple of hours but they are pretty awesome.

if you're broke and don't work with it, you can probably relax by learn a programming language and coding stuff even if it's shitty. you can start with a java calculator with a gui, for example. getting something done can be pretty rewarding and it is somewhat productive. but it's a pain getting there.

another alternative is rosetta stone. it's a program for learning other languages. takes time and effort, like programming, but it's simpler and might be more useful depending on what you have in mind.

you could try something else, like cooking classes or actually taking classes to learn some other language instead of using rosetta stone. working out might help too. the thing is, you gotta do it progressively, so starting with an activity that forces you to be outside of the house is sometimes a bigger step than what someone depressed might be willing to try.

anyway, whatever you end up doing, find something that you can look back and see that has had some positive results or helped you somehow. fapping/drinking/playing mmo's won't help you.

Exercise, kick it into overdrive at work and use the positive feedback of your boss as encouragement (not to mention promotion), and find a decent hobby that interests you. Preferably something you do with other people so you actually get some socializing in.

I was, but it's Winnipeg and I hate going outside, so I'm using my elliptical five days a week. Three days a week I do push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, and squats.

Malek, you probably need some sort of hobby or volunteering activity where you have to interact with people.  Maybe you can help provide free legal services for stalkers or something.

interact with people.

Yeah, that's going to be a problem.

Malek, get the hell out of Winnipeg!

Random conversation with a friend who visited Canada during the summer:
Me: Where did you go during your trip?
Him: Vancouver & Montreal, had amazing time there. Toronto, it was ok. Winnipeg, I have no fucking idea why I went there; it was so fucking depressing I wanted to kill myself.
Me: :-\
I'd like to blame Winnipeg, but I've only been here for a little over a year.

Sure, but...

Wouldn't feel more motivated to go outside if you weren't residing there? I know that I blame the weather and the desert for my lack outdoor activity. It would be stupid to suggest that it's the source of your problems, but it would certainly help.

Anything that pulls you far away from FG would certainly help.

More of a distraction really. Why else would he target such an unattainable goal?

Unattainable goals mean that he doesn't even have to try. How convenient.

Spend less time on the internet and more time watching people. Go to a café or even just walk around a park. Talk to people who aren't just represented by text on a screen.

I've overcome the worst of it, still have a ways to go.  What gets me through some of the relapses is just the knowledge that the depression is what is causing the problems for the most part.  Alot of the things that get me down are/were silly and its just a phase not easily attributed to realistic problems.  If you just remind yourself that it doesn't have to last forever I find it helps.  I wake up the next morning feeling good.

But other than that, I'd say be around others without trying to gain pity.  Find out what other people like to do and try those things.  I know being depressed means you're apathetic as fuck right now but its all about gaining traction and keeping that momentum.  Let go of those things you lost.  Accept it, have no regrets, and find new alternatives.  I especially stress having no regrets.  Despite what most people think, you could not have done things differently.  Don't tell yourself I shoulda woulda coulda because for all intents and purposes- no, your "free will" factoring into any decision was just a conditioned response based on a chain of cause and effect during your whole life.

sad
