Do you consider gifting a Wii a form of punishment?
« on: October 07, 2009, 03:00:02 PM »
My folks are thinking about giving one of their nephews a Wii, but I'm trying to talk them out of it. I don't want his development stunted by crappy waggle games.

I really do think that giving someone a Wii is probably the equivalent of rape.

I dunno, I'd think of it more as an expression of severe disappointment.

How old is the kid?

Obviously it's hard for us hardcore gamers to fathom but kids under 12 all seem to prefer the Wii.

Not my kid. The first thing she did was ask to play with a 360 controller.

He's 9-years-old.

And to be fair, there's a ton of child friendly content on the Xbox 360 that's far superior to the waggle garbage.

Explain to him the Wiimote is just for Wiisports, the other games don't work with what's in his region and only feed him Virtual Console and GameCube titles and make him use the Wavebird for everything.

Buy him a X360 - the cheapest next-gen console. And you can mod it.

Except then he'd be responsible for providing games. I doubt his parents would know enough to unplug the system and stay off of Live, buy and burn to dual layer discs and know where to get the games.

People gift each other Apple stuff and it's just as bad IMO.

Get him a 360, give the parents a good list of $10-$20 games that are suitable for a kid that age and are actually good, and be done with it.

If he does get a Wii, you can turn him on to a REAL murder simulator console by gifting him the gateway drug between the two, MadWorld.  :gun

When it comes to the Wii male audience, only grandpa's and nfags love the Wii. Other males I know -no matter how young/old- really hate the Wii.

If you love the Wii, you're either;

- a nfag (see the obnoxious nfags over at gaf and other forums)
- a girl/woman ( see dykona akheni and the oprah audience, mothers etc)
- grandpa/grandma ( see saint cornelius)

I don't think you want your cousin to become any of that. You have the power to save his life. BUY ANOTHER CONSOLE

Since the kid is only 9, he will have a higher tolerance for mediocre tripe.  A Wii would be perfect for him.

This hot girl I know with huge jugs loves the Wii. She loves Mario Galaxy. We always chat about having her help me play through it. She'll collect the bits. Hehe.

Why would you get a kid a Xbox 360? GOd this forum is so biased .Atleast get him a PS3 where there's platformers for kids, adventure games, unique interesting non violent games like Flower. You can't get that kind of stuff on 360.

My brother and I saved up and bought a Sega CD with our own.

Sewer Shark is fucking horrible. Sonic CD, Bouncers, NBA Jam TE and others made up for it quickly, though.

Thank GOD my nephew talked me out of buying a N64 back in the day. Otherwise I'd still be an nfag.
Buying a Ps1 was the best and most important decision of my life.

If he's not already a "hardcore" gamer, it doesn't really matter.  Even if he likes serious well-made games, he can probably find maybe 5 games in his favorite genres to keep him busy.  Like literally 5 games.

I'd rather him have a brief moment of happiness with a truly great videogame library than endure the barren wasteland that is the PS3. :-\

okay first off a kid isn't REQUIRED to spend hours in front of the tv playing games just because s/he got a console

second there's this thing called parenting a person could employ to make sure they don't spend countless hours playing games

but hey i understand some folks have to limit what their child can enjoy because they shouldn't have had a child in the first place

- Super Mario Galaxy - if you like him

- Wii Music - if you hate him
