Finally got the RROD
« on: October 07, 2009, 03:34:43 PM »
:rock

Been waiting a long time for this.  It's the only thing that's kept me from feeling like a full-fledged Xbot.

This 360 that just RRODed is actually my 2nd 360.  My first 360 was a HDMI less model which I sold to a friend.

Ironically, the first 360 never gave me any problems despite being used much more often.

I've barely used my 360 in the past 6 months and I was only playing a DVD on it today when it died.

As usual, I had put the DVD into the HD-DVD add-on in order to lengthen the lifespan of the game drive but I guess that didn't matter.

So what do I need to do now to fix or replace the 360?

My 360 should be still under warranty because I got it about 2 years ago.  I don't have the receipt though.  Can MS just check the manufacturing date?

I think you just have to enter manufacturing date and serial # on the site, no receipt necessary.

Xbox.com will take care of everything short of physically boxing the thing up.

How should I box it?

Any ideas why it would die just by playing a DVD?  The weather in my area dropped by about 10 degrees F this week.  Could the rapid change in temperature be a factor?

You can either take it to UPS and give them a couple bucks to pack it or you can grab a box from somewhere and stuff it with balled-up paper or something.

much more than likely not

ive left my 360 in the sunroom overnight this past winter and woke up to play skate 2, my 360 was basically frozen and even had condensation on it, i just gave it 15 minutes until it didnt make any weird sounds, it was still way less than room temperature though

Why would I try the towel trick when I can just get a new 360, you distinguished mentally-challenged Sfag?

Btw, MS's service is awesome even though I could barely understand their Indian employees.  I had to call them because the shipping label won't load on their website.   After 30 mins of straining to understand what the Indian rep was saying, I finally got MS to send the shipping label to me.

The solder is cheap and to avoid paying fees in California they avoided using lead. So the cheap solder doesn't handle temperature changes well, and eventually lets the chips flex off the board from the expansion and contraction from the heat.

So actually turning it on and off frequently does more damage than running it for a long time. You know how your house creaks at night? Same shit in an Xbox, except apparently the support beam in the bedroom likes to fail.

Actually, I'm grateful that my 360 broke down when it did.  At least it's still under the 3yr warranty.

Also, it's almost a certainty that the 360 I get back will be better manufactured than my original one.

Yeah, that's probably how my 360 died.  I never leave the 360 running for long periods of time and sometimes 2-3 weeks go by before I turn it on again.

How the hell would a functioning PS3 prevent me from having a broken 360, distinguished mentally-challenged fellow Sfag #2?

Anyways, I do have a PS3, every other current system and most importantly, a kickass PC so I seriously doubt I'd miss the 360 much.

Why the hell would I play COD6 on my 360 when I could play it with much better image quality and higher performance on my PC?

As a point of comparison, RE5 barely runs @30 FPS in 720P w/4x AA on the 360 and even worse on the PS3.  On my PC, at 1920x1200, I get close to 200 FPS w/max settings and 8X AA.

Btw, the PS3 won't be turned on much even though its bigger, better looking sibling is gone.

Yeah, good luck getting a "new" xbox out of them. Last three times I've sent my RRoD or shitty broken disc tray in, i've gotten the same fucking one back, just fixed. Don't kid yourself.

Yeah, they just replace the mobo with the same one as yours.

One guy I knew was scamming MS, for a while he'd buy broken 360s with something OTHER than an RROD, induce it, send it in for a warranty and get it back with both issues fixed, but they slowly stopped doing that.

They've been running this for so long there's no real way to game the system, aside from getting free Live and a clean faceplate each time.

Well, Wlilco said he got a brand new 360 that was much quieter than his previous one.

Maybe it's because he had an Elite?  That would suck if Elite owners get better service but it wouldn't surprise me.

From what I understand, you'll never get a non-HDMI unit exchanged for an HDMI unit.

I have a HDMI unit.  Does that mean I'll get back a system with the newer components?
