Game Informer's new site redesign actually decent.

I rarely read Game Informer in both print or online, sticking mostly with Kotaku and Joystiq for gaming news, but Game Informer's new redesign is a welcome upgrade.

I got GI for two years through the Gamestop membership during the PS2/Xbox/GC era.

Back then, I thought that GI was a decent gaming mag as long as you didn't base your purchases on its reviews.

GI was really biased towards Sony in those days.

I heard that it was because Sony games and systems always sold the most.  Due to the Gamestop connection, the GI staff was expected to help shill the games that were most likely to sell well.

I haven't had GI this gen but my friend told me that GI is now biased towards the 360 instead, probably because it's more popular than the PS3.

Is that true or has GI become more ethical in this gen?

I don't know about platform bias, but GI has admitted to rating games based on how they assume their readers will feel about games, and I'm pretty sure there is some sales potential factor going into some of these reviews. Not that there is anything really unethical about speaking to your audience, but hey. I certainly don't put much stock in their reviews, but then I'm not sure I can name any review source I really trust to offer a balanced and reasonable buyer's guide.

they're a gaming mag run by a video game store, so my money is on "no."  On the other hand, the 360 has had games that are worth being excited about and the multiplat games are usually better on it, so it can't all be bias.

some guy on another forum who used to work for GI tore me a new one when I posted that the magazine is tainted. I forgot his reasoning, but it was something about how gamestop isn't very hands-on with the GI people.  I dunno if I buy it.

That does suck.  The 2-4 pg walkthroughs were probably the best reason to have a GI subscription.

To their credit, I was totally expecting high scores for Prototype after all their hyping of the game, but it got a critical look in the review. Not negative enough considering what a shit game it is, but more negative than expected.
